By adding the following line to /etc/pam.d/common_auth:
auth optional pam_mount.so use_first_pass
and to /etc/pam.d/common_session:
session optional pam_mount.so
you can enable the pam_mount login for any way a user can login (kdm, gdm, login etc). Taken from the Debian Grimoire . It's also ...

I tried this one my home-dir once, but the --rebuild-tree completely hosed everything filename-wise, which made it a complete pain in the ass. Luckily i make a complete back-up every night of my homedir using rsnapshot. So this might seem a bit redundant, but the best undelete is probably a recent ...

I get the same error. I didn't change anything from the default, and tried console only. The error forces me to type the same password twice. Some google-ing turned up this page on a RedHat mailing list. Seems they made a design decision that broke pam-mount. Looking on the bright side, you can have ...

Does the new xserver feel `snappier' with these extra extensions? I was watching your cpu level on gkrellm, and they barely went above 30%. Glad to see they're finally offloading some stuff onto the gpu.

Choosing both ACPI and APM at kernel compile time will default to ACPI when you boot the kernel, since this is the newer one. For older pc's you'll probably want APM, for newer ones ACPI.

I use this setup, where i have one xserver for my tv and one for my monitor. Note that they are independant, so i can switch virtual desktops and still keep watching the movie on tv. And you really don't need a top of the line card to do this (i have a geforce 2 with tv out).

If you have an nvidia ...

I have the same problem using the 2.6.8.1-ck1 patchset. It keeps complaining about the headers, and won't run. So far i haven't tried using a vanilla kernel, but i'm staying on 2.6.7-ck5 until this is resolved.

just to be on the safe side, try

Code: Select all

rc-update add vmware default
and start vmware services by typing

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/vmware start
If you get some error run

Code: Select all

vmware-config.pl
first, and if that breaks you have to remove a single file in /etc/vmware called something like `not_configured'.

Code: Select all

emerge vmware-workstation
does the trick very nicely. After that run vmware-config as root and add vmware to the default runlevel. That will start the vmware services when you boot your pc.

Yep, everything is running fast, but compiling and startup times are much faster too! Too bad the clock is messed up, but anything that uses the RTC for it's timing needs (such as mplayer) is oké. Xine messes up big time though.

I wonder if this can be made into a patch and the problems worked out ...

In a perfect world we would have every developer that programmed a GTK1.x application port it to GTK2.x. This would make fonts prettier, have a more consistent look across every GTK application and just be nicer on the desktop and easier to switch.

However, great programs like sylpheed still use ...

Re: spawning a root shell as user

Please don't ask me why I should want this, I'm just paranoid a sys-admin will update to a kernel without p-trace bug.
Sounds to me like you have no business getting root on that box, and that sys-admin probably should keep up to date. If you feel you have a legitimate need for root acces to a box ...

Teedog makes a good point, try writing an ebuild yourself and submit it. Lots of examples in /usr/portage, and you might learn a thing or two. Depending on how motivated you are modifying an ebuild really isn't that hard.

And please, remember that the developers are volunteers who get no form of ...

If you have `alsa' in your USE-flags and you recompile arts it will give you the option to use the alsa sound system from within arts. That should solve most of your mixing problems from within KDE.

Make sure you have sshd running on your gentoo pc /etc/init.d/sshd start and you just enter the local ip-adress of the gentoo box and select ssh in putty.
