GTK themes obsolete?

Are you people usin some GTK (not GTK2) apps? I ask this because I see in the gnome-themes packages are being included the GTK2 part of the theme, but not the GTK one. This seems to be a tendence in the actual Gnome dev group

Whats more, in the 99% of the themes you download in art.gnome.org and such pages, only the GTK2 theme is included, too...

But there are lots of apps that are not ported to GTK2 like Gtoaster (the best CD burner for Gnome IMHO), the vmWare GUI, Celestia... and lots more. In fact the GTK1 libraries are in portage for a reason, aren't them?

Nobody uses those GTK programs? If you do, how do you get them skinned? I would like to know how do you people solve this problem. Thanx a lot.

I believe it's based on USE flags, i.e. USE="gtk -gtk2".
Some themes will have gtk counterparts. Some won't.

Also, themes.freshmeat.net has a poo-load of gtk themes.

The GTK and GTK2 are not exclusive, they both can (and in fact should) be installed and GTK apps will use the GTK part and GTK2 apps the corresponding GTK2 part. If you look in /usr/share/themes, both GTK and GTK2 parts are in the same folder, in different subfolders!! So they can perfectly coexist.

I dont want GTK apps, I want GTK2 ones (as everybody), so I think you should say USE="-gtk gtk2", but there are apps that only can be compiled against GTK!! Am I losing something?

In a perfect world we would have every developer that programmed a GTK1.x application port it to GTK2.x. This would make fonts prettier, have a more consistent look across every GTK application and just be nicer on the desktop and easier to switch.

However, great programs like sylpheed still use the gtk 1.x toolkit, so we're stuck with it till it gets ported (or we port it ourselves).

There are themes out there for GTK1, but you have to look for them. If you find one you like and the theme you're using doesn't have GTK1 support, just stick the theme you like in the folder with the GTK2 theme.

I see, we must fix it as good as we can...

I really love Gnome (and GTK) but this will be always a handicap comparing to KDE. Hope good GTK2 programs appear to substitute the old abandoned ones, and those active like sylpheed get ported soon.
