I have a GeforceFX. I'd like to run a second X server to display to TV out in addition to the X server that I run for VGA. Is this possible? Has anyone done this?

I haven't done this myself, but i believe you can't make 2 xservers share one gfx card.

But i do know that you can make one xserver use two screens. And there are lots of posts about this here.
Also remember that most gfx cards with tv-out only allow you to output the same thing both on vga and tv-out. Like using one for monitoring the other.. You need top brand cards (that support this) to output different things on tvout and vga.

What you can do is use two gfx cards to output different things.. And use two xservers, one for each card.. But this is too much for my knoledge :D

I use this setup, where i have one xserver for my tv and one for my monitor. Note that they are independant, so i can switch virtual desktops and still keep watching the movie on tv. And you really don't need a top of the line card to do this (i have a geforce 2 with tv out).

If you have an nvidia card just read through the documentation that came with your nvidia-drivers. It tells you how to set it up.

Or look here for my config.

Wow!!! 8O

I have a geforce FX 5200 and i belived (read told so..) that i couldn't do that! I think nvidia says that only geforce quadro can do that..

I'll see if i can setup mine like that! It's sooo cooool! Already tried using the same xserver with different screens, but eventually gave up..

Thanks!
