When i first discovered this program it was simply a fluke, I accidentally stumbled across it and since then its been invaluable. its called Filelight (emerge filelight) it allows you to browse your filesystem as a complex hierarchy of pie charts showing you erxactly which directories and files are taking up the most space on your disk. Try it!

konqueror from KDE has a similar feature (just looks different). It's called "File Size View", but it appears only on the toolbar if you open a directory AND if you have configured it. I guess it's somewhere under Settings ... and it's not easy to find.

In those pre-KDE times, there was xdu. The command line was "du | xdu".

imho the kde fielsize view isn't nearly as useful or easy to interpret as filelight.

This is an excellent program, but as a gnome user i would love to know if there's an GT+ equivalent for graphically displaying disk usage?

theres nothing that I know of, but an app like this only needs to be used occasionally and never for very long. the impact of using QT Once in a while is next to nil. I run a few GTK Apps from time to time, just because they're more suited to my needs, I rarely let the decision between GTK and QT Affect my decision unless its an app that i'm going to be running almost constantly.

Not gtk, but I'd advise that you try fsv. It's only has a few deps:

x11-libs/gtkglarea
virtual/opengl
virtual/x11

I just noticed that installing filelight also adds a new view setting to konqueror, basically embedding filelight into konq. very nice.

you know once i asked people here about software like this and i got the whole "just use du, its awsome and does everything you need"

I'll look at the apps here. I was wondering if anyone knows of programs that can take the output of du (which is in a file) and analyize it later...xdiskusage can but I need more graphs

reason being the du is performed on a server with no X

I don't know about your computer setup, but maybe you could use ssh -X from a computer with X?

Latest version of baobab v.2.2.0 can scan also remote folders on remote servers thru ssh,ftp,smb,http or https.
