Netscape Communicator start-up glibc error.

Hi.

I installed Netscape Communicator 4.79 (also tried netscape-navigator) upon trying to run it, I am greeted with:

zeitgeist@geist zeitgeist $ netscape
/opt/netscape/netscape: relocation error: /opt/netscape/netscape: symbol _res, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time ...

Errr... what's wrong with openoffice's page numbers way?
Geeezzzz I can't work with office nowadays... I have to take out all that stupid hiding and bad layout. Office 2000 (and up) is more eye candy than productivity...

It's complicated for no reason. Microsoft Office's (a better office package ...

You are using those flags and complaining about compiler problems?

Seriously, lower them to something more conservative and try again.

I've compiled Xine-lib on my pentium4 with no problems.

I use "march=pentium4 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer"

A decent office package that can do page numbers on documents easy, rather then performing voodoo.

Recently used MS Word 2003 and I must say, it's great. Though, I don't have a Windows machine at home, I really wish we could get something for Linux.

It starts up litterly in under 1 second on a 2 ...

Xine also has a much better Mozilla plugin than MPlayers that "just works." I've ran into a lot of trouble trying to play QT with Mplayer's but once I found Xine's (which is included in GXine) or you can get it on the web standalone, works great.

Same here. I've had problems with both -O3 and -Os, so I'm sticking with -O2 for now on. Must be pretty stable to use since almost the entire Slackware distribution is compiled with -O2 ( http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=3166&page=2 ).

Most distributions compile with something like -O2 ...

We need a decent open-source Office package that can do proper page numbers, because OpenOffice/Staroffice sure as hell can't.

I've found -O2 to be faster than -O3. I see lots of people throwing out tons of cflags they don't even know what they do.

Running lots of benchmakrs and i've found -march=pentium4 -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer to be the best for m.e

I only load these:

Option "omit xfree86-dga"
EndSubSection

Load "dbe"
Load "glx"

# Freetype module is used for gtk 1.x
Load "freetype"

GLX is for NVIDIA's OpenGL, dbe is double buffer extension. I wouldn't load freetype except its used by X applications for ttf ...

Do you have the fonts in fontconfig?

I used a Windows XP and copied all fonts from XP onto Linux, including the international ones. Now I get a huge collection of fonts and all international languages to show up in Epiphany, Mozilla, etc. None of those square boxes.

I posted a guide on how todo ...

For applications that use fonts from XF86Config you can't type them like that, that's fontconfig.

I'd have to say that gnome 2.0-2.4 can be catagorized as "horrid". It's become increasing less horrid however. That doesn't mean it still isn't. 8)
Why?

How was GNOME 2.4 a "horrid release?" It is nothing but better than 2.2, that statement makes absolutely no sense at all

"something like a backup"

You should always make backups of important directories.
I have a crontab running that backs up my /etc, /root, weekly, one that backs up my music monthly, (did do my movies too.. but that dir is so big now..) and one that backs up my schoolwork hourly.

They are backuped ...

I'm not exactly sure how you can do it, since you do not have GNOME installed.

However, in GNOME's control center there is an option to do this to applications that follow GNOME's standards, which Epiphany closely does.

The "Menus and Toolbars" option of the GNOME control center allows you to do ...

Have you tried launching Mozilla from console and looking for any errors?

Have you ran revdep-rebuild to see if it finds any missing libraries?

Those should help. The slowdown you are talking about might just be gecko doing its job...
