Gnome Panel Crash - driving me mad !!

Post by robint99 » Fri Nov 14, 2003 11:21 am

A few days ago, for apparently no reason, my Gnome 2,4 panel started to crash. It happens as the panel loads after logging in, and an error message gets displayed. As soon as I close the message, the panel tries to reload, crashes again, and displays the error message again. This is repeated indefinitely. I tried filing a bug report with bug-buddy, but that crashed too.

I've read other threads on here about adding launchers causing this problem, but I hadn't added any - it just started out of the blue. Nothing I've tried has made this crash go away. In desperation, I've deleted the entire contents of my .gnome2, .gnome2_private, .gnome, .gconf and .gconf directories, but this made no difference, apart from returning me to a default gnome configuration. I even copied all the .gnome directories over from the root user, as Gnome runs without a problem there, again with no joy.

Does anybody have any idea what's causing this and what I can do to fix it ? If not, what's the best way to completly remove Gnome from my system so that I can re-emerge it ?

Hope somebody can help me with this before I go insane

P.S. Using KDE isn't an option - despite this problem I still prefer Gnome.

I had the same problem too, and I found out that gnome had somehow crashed its settings. The solution I found, after re-emerging gnome-panel three times (which was useless). Was to remove all my settings.

Do this:
1.Drop out of X into console and make sure gnome isn't running.
2 Look in the /tmp directory for files or directories like gconfd-<username> and orbit-<username> and remove these.
3. Restart gnome. Does it work? If not start from stage 1 again and this time also remove any .gconfd and .gnome2 and the likes from your home directory. This will however remove all your settings.

This whole experience really made me loose faith in gconf. But at least now it works again.

Thanks for the tip Nylle - it did the trick and my panel is now back :D :D :D

Zeitgeist, I wasn't running the weather applet, but I'll be sure not to try it - don't want this happening again ...
