It kicks ass! setup is pretty painless (grub may give you some trouble) but once it's installed, automouting devices, cds, etc, works out of the box! And, it's pretty damn painless to upgrade.
go to http://appdb.winehq.org/ for a nice database of programs that run/sort of run/etc in wine. The database may also give you some pointers for installing/running certian games.
as for dosbox, I believe the project's homepage has a database that lists currently working apps/games under dosbox ...

I'm using the latest kernel (2.6.1) with ATAPI support and have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo. I've never tried DVD burning with the 2.4 series (if that's what you're using) -- not sure if that's the deal, though. I'm guess something's just set up ...
oh, and in your /etc/make.conf file, make sure ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" is commeted like this
#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~yourarch"
this blocks unstable packages. Although i usually have this uncommented, i do not have xft-2.0.1-R1 installed (I have xft-2.0.1 installed.) that MIGHT be your problem as well ...
hmm, when you said you did a*clean* install before, did you wipe all partions anew????
and did truetype fonts aa work at least ONCE before??
from the first post, i'm betting it was something screwy in your /tmp dir and you should have wiped that clean to fix it. if not, i'm kinda stumped here.
