Er, how about trying ubuntu linux?

It kicks ass! :P setup is pretty painless (grub may give you some trouble) but once it's installed, automouting devices, cds, etc, works out of the box! And, it's pretty damn painless to upgrade.

'Nuff said.

Yeah, they were by Sierra (the windows ones.)

You're right on the money, Flammie. Games like TIM died in the mid ninties, when every company was scrabling to make their "doom killer."

Bring back adventure games, too, damn it!

go to http://appdb.winehq.org/ for a nice database of programs that run/sort of run/etc in wine. The database may also give you some pointers for installing/running certian games.

as for dosbox, I believe the project's homepage has a database that lists currently working apps/games under dosbox ...

Another vote for the Gravis Gamepad Pro. It's just that simple. :P

My second choice would be to use a psx controller adapter ala Kiki Joy X (USB) -- works pretty damn good as well.

do you have rumble support (aka force feedback) enabled in your kernel?

that is known to be, uh, buggy, to say the least.

you could try it! I've never had to do that, though.

what type of dvd medium are you burning to (dvd+rw?)

also, try emerging k3b -- it's a buring frontend that uses kdelibs, growisofs, cdrecord, and a buttload of other utilities. I think it's worth a shot.

sony, eh? weird. I have the same drive (4x version.)

I'm using the latest kernel (2.6.1) with ATAPI support and have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo. I've never tried DVD burning with the 2.4 series (if that's what you're using) -- not sure if that's the deal, though. I'm guess something's just set up ...

yeah, um, I wasn't replying to you, SNo0py, I was talking to substance.

but, yeah, you shouldn't be running vmware while burning dvd's -- or anything else that cpu intensive while burning.

Sounds like your medium isn't empty.

growisofs is "supposed" to auto blank the medium for you, but in your case, it isn't working.

try growisofs again, but instead target /dev/dvd when writing. I don't know if this will work, but it's worth a shot.

most likey growisofs isn't compatible with your ...

Sounds like a burner problem. Has it worked before? Hmm, with data -- well technically, the iso is data.

My bet would be that you need to try ATAPI support (instead of scsi.)

Test the ISO before buring!

Here's a neat tip to test how the dvd will work (or won't) before even burning.

you need the loop module/feature

Code: Select all

1) mount -o loop -t auto [iso] [mount_dir]
2) point software player to [mount_dir]

menumaker 0.15 doesn't do too bad of a job creating a decent menu, then from there, edit at your hearts content.

Code: Select all

emerge menumaker
mmaker -o menu.xml openbox3
your menu.xml file should go under ~/.config/openbox for a user specific configuration.

check your PATH variables and/or reemerge xscorch.

p.s. - if you have the original scorched earth, try it under dosbox! :P

fceu help

hmm, I had this problem before with an earilier versions but forget the cause.

emerge fceu-096 and use the sdl version. before trying a game, maybe try deleting the .fceu* directory. that may be the problem.

good luck!

oh, and in your /etc/make.conf file, make sure ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" is commeted like this

#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~yourarch"

this blocks unstable packages. Although i usually have this uncommented, i do not have xft-2.0.1-R1 installed (I have xft-2.0.1 installed.) that MIGHT be your problem as well ...

hmm, when you said you did a*clean* install before, did you wipe all partions anew????

and did truetype fonts aa work at least ONCE before??

from the first post, i'm betting it was something screwy in your /tmp dir and you should have wiped that clean to fix it. if not, i'm kinda stumped here.

what version of xfree are you using? what ebuild, preferably? I remember one version had problems with anti aliased fonts.

before starting X, envoke this at the prompt to disable aa for gnome:
export GDK_USE_XFT=0

this SHOULD get rid of your problems if this is the case, but ya get no aa fonts ...

i believe sms is in there -- never checked -- but genesis is in there, for sure! check the docs and/or web page to double check.

*edit* also, check out PotatoSMS, a java emu. you must have java working with your browser, though, to use this. no joy support, too (which sucks.)
