truetype fonts broken on fresh install

  • Quote

Post by cephlen » Thu Jan 16, 2003 3:28 pm

Hello,

This is a fresh install, my first time with gentoo.

The problem I am having is with truetype fonts. They are broken after a from scratch install.

Gnome works great without AA. With AA, it crashes. Phoenix was giving me a slew of errors like this guy http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=28759 but after a reboot, now the errors are fewer.

Either way, it appears that with a basic fresh install, the truetype fonts are broken.

Yes, the Luxi fonts are installed, they are in the TTF directory and look fine. All font files are -r--r--r--

I have tried many of the other suggestions presented in these forums, but nothing seems to work.

Phoenix gives me these errors:

Hi cephlen, I have exactly the same error and cannot manage to solve it. I made an emerge -u world yesterday and can only start gnome in failsafe session with aa (after booting, I have to killall gdm and then relaunch it). I add "gnome-session" to my .gnomerc, my users have a shell, I wrote the fontdir in the /etc/X11/fonts/fonts.conf and some other thing without success. I am about to unmerge aalib but if it works with, it would be much better. I once read a thing about uncommenting an option in a gnome config file but didn't found it since. I will search (again).

Regards,
Sébastien.

I have 2 errors with /var/log/wtmp and /var/run/utmp in .xsession-errors and 2 with the ttf luci font in .gnomerc-errors (fonts). I disabled aa in fonts.conf, without success. Gnome doesn't work better. And the syste don't manage to stop gdm at the end when I reboot.

Any luck sebgarden?

I have gone through and read the "official" font posting, and did everything there... no luck. Uninstalled xft, xfree, and fontconfig. Reinstalled. no luck...

well, still broken.

Anyone have any ideas why on a fresh install without anything more than XFree, Xft, FontConfig, and gnome base fonts are invalid?

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/, removing from list!

am also getting this error now.

My system seems to be falling apart and going to pieces.

what version of xfree are you using? what ebuild, preferably? I remember one version had problems with anti aliased fonts.

before starting X, envoke this at the prompt to disable aa for gnome:
export GDK_USE_XFT=0

this SHOULD get rid of your problems if this is the case, but ya get no aa fonts.

or do this --

try this to see what version of xfree you have installed:
emerge search xfree

if it's not xfree 4.2.1-r2 then update like so:
emerge rsync && emerge xfree
[resident anime junkie] -- not just a linux freak.

Yes, using GDK_USE_XFT=0 does work, but the fonts are horrible.

Please note that I cant get ANY truetype fonts to work - neither in Gnome nor in Phoenix.

and my XftConfig:

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"

I have uninstalled and reinstalled these 3 packages many times to get this working. My system is very clean and fresh - I dont even have anything like alsa, cups, samba installed yet. Just about all I have are the requirements to get gnome-base/gnome installed.

This was a Stage2 install, using gentoo 1.4_rc2.

Thanks!

Hi Cephlen, it didn't worked better as I emerged xfree for an hour. Now I'm exactly copying your /etc/X11/XF86Config and others files. Could you post your XF86Config to see if it helps ?

I reboot now.
See you later !

Regards,
Sébastien.

After rebooting, it don't work better: I always have the same blinking screen at gdm start and it switches to tty0 before the gnome login screen appears (or it appears a few tenth of second). Then I have to type gdm-stop and gdm to run the gdm-login but I can't log into a normal session. I have no aaI tried to see in whoch order emerging the packages for a running X in typing:

I only have an error message complaining about luxi fonts in .gnomerc-errors and the one about utmp and wtmp in .xsession-errors. So if I could unmerge the package causing this font error to constrain x to use an other font, perhaps it would work.

So now, Some questions :
1. How can I choose the font that use X by default (some type1 font is enough) ?
2.Cephlen, in which order did you emerge your three packages ? Did you remember it ?
3. Are xft and freetype doublons or is one better than another or are they totally different ?
4. Is there another version of xfree that works better ?

Regards,
Sébastien.

cephlen edb # emerge -p gnome

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.2-r2
[ebuild N ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.1
[ebuild N ] x11-base/xfree-4.2.1-r2
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gdm-2.4.0.12-r2
[ebuild N ] gnome-extra/gnome-utils-2.0.6
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-2.0.3-r1

I built them in this order.

cephlen edb # emerge -p xft

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.2-r2
[ebuild N ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.1
[ebuild N ] x11-base/xfree-4.2.1-r2
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/xft-2.0.1

but stuck xft in there before gnome. Perhaps I dont need xft and this is the cause of all my problems?

well, I messed up pretty badly trying to get this to work.

I was clearing everything of gnome - was going to start again - and did a rm -rf gnome * in my /etc dir... wiped it all out :( oops.. darn spacebar...

I am going to wipe everything out and start over again.

hmm, when you said you did a*clean* install before, did you wipe all partions anew????

and did truetype fonts aa work at least ONCE before??

from the first post, i'm betting it was something screwy in your /tmp dir and you should have wiped that clean to fix it. if not, i'm kinda stumped here.

oh, and in your /etc/make.conf file, make sure ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" is commeted like this

#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~yourarch"

this blocks unstable packages. Although i usually have this uncommented, i do not have xft-2.0.1-R1 installed (I have xft-2.0.1 installed.) that MIGHT be your problem as well as a few other not so thouroghly tested packages.

so, make sure you do a STABLE compilation before diving into unstable territorry.

hope this helps! :P

Nonetheless, it doesn't work even with xft-2.0.1 but thank you, it could e working with the next xfree-release.

The problem with xsession and the /var/log/wtmp and /var/run/utmp appears to be the bug #12767: XDM does not write wtmp entries. For the fonts, I believe it can wait for the next X release.

Regards,
Sébastien.

I'm having a bit of a problem with some of my fonts... with the truetype fonts, I'm not getting the boldfacing of fonts - for example, trebuchet ms will not display bold at 10pt.

I've checked my configs against my work box, which IS working, and everything looks good.

I've turned on sub-pixel rendering, I've got the freetype module loaded, and I've confirmed the fontpaths in /etc/X11/fs/config and /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Anybody have this problem?

So what was the resolution? I just did a clean install (finished getting Gnome compiled last night) and everything is looking sweet. However, I am getting that error when I shutdown:

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/, removing from list!

Or when I start or whenever. I followed the directions in this thread:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=55823

Ran the ttmkfdir and the fc-cache and still no dice. I have no true type fonts and I WILL NOT live without AA.
