Apparently the vanilla use flag was turned on on my system, and the description of it insists almost entirely of a warning not to turn it on for system wide use... no idea how it would have gotten turned on, as I don't remember it at all...

Removing the use flag causes gcc to build correctly.

For the record.... something still wasn't quite right... 3d stuff worked great, but when I tried to use mythtv (which uses open-vsync to time the video apparently) it maxed out my cpu and still couldn't quite play... I decided mythtv is a lot more important to me than 3d games are, so I've gone ...

Okay, I've fixed the issue... sorta.

After installing the drivers directly from nvidia, and then switching to the xorg-x11 opengl interface (which I'm thinking is actually using nvidia glx, as the 'standard' glx location is where the official nvidia installer would install to, not the dir that ...

my advise to you is stop fussing and your card isnt broken thats just how it is. Although if you do find a fix I would be interested but I don't think you will.
I didn't say my card was broken, precisely the opposite. The problem is NOT with the card, it is a software/driver problem. I'm tempted ...

I hate to brake it to you but the MX cards are very slow. Infact a GeForce 3 Ti 300/500 will blow that card away. The MX were cheap stripped down versions, and they really were subsets of a Geforce 3 chipset, not 4 like it says. Still if you were getting more before something "changed."

NO ...

I was confused about how good my video card was. I think I will look for a better one. Thanks.
No, I don't think you were.

I think I understand what you are trying to do but lemme repeat it just to make sure we are on the same page...

I've been doing something along the same lines for a ...

I really do not like digikam for other reasons though, but unless someone knows of another program I guess I'll have to use it until I get time to write my own.

ATI Remote Wonder and lirc not working

I'm running the 2.6.8.1 kernel (NOT gentoo kernel if it matters) and trying to get an ATI Remote wonder working with lirc.

I've followed all the instructions I found to setup the lirc_atiusb driver for it, but when I run irw it doesn't register any of the button presses.

I've tried a few times and ...

With small amounts of RAM and small caches (like on a celery) using -Os can cause speed increases in many cases by reducing swapping and cache misses.

The easiest way to sync (I have an SL-5500) is with Qtopia Desktop. You can emerge qtopia-desktop-bin if you want to check it out ahead of time.

The main issue for me was that it only supports syncing with certain apps, and the ones I use aren't among them. Maybe you'll be luckier, give it a look ...

Hard drive won't go into standby

No matter what I tried, I couldn't get my hard drive to drop into standby when idle... Even if I manually use hdparm put the hard drive into standby, it will immediately spin it right back up.

I recently got a new hard drive and there is the same problem, so I know it's not a problem with the drive ...

They could be slow... but Abiword and Gimp should both work (I would imagine Gimp would be noticably slow though ;) )
I'd recommend grabbing another webbrowser though... Links (with the -g option) actually works very well and is very fast, Opera is another good choice (although commercial)
