ATI Remote Wonder and lirc not working

I'm running the 2.6.8.1 kernel (NOT gentoo kernel if it matters) and trying to get an ATI Remote wonder working with lirc.

I've followed all the instructions I found to setup the lirc_atiusb driver for it, but when I run irw it doesn't register any of the button presses.

I've tried a few times and as far as I can see I've done everything right. None of the information I have been able to find says anything about what could be wrong if its not working.

I know the kernel has a driver for the remote, but it maps most of the buttons to the keyboard input which I do NOT want, I want to run the remote with the lirc drivers so it's a completely seperated input.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?
