Try a "killall nautilus" as root and then start nautilux as your user.

If this fails... logout. Switch to a console (ctrl+alt+f1) and login as root. Stop xdm (/etc/init.d/xdm stop). Run bonobo-slay. Then restart xdm and login to see if it is fixed.

You can do updates which handles it for you. Try "emerge -uDav world". You should really read the emerge man page too.

If I'm not mistaking X.org has lots of the old XF86 devs on, is more updated and
maybe most importantly, is free (as far as I know).
XFree86 is free too.

Xorg forked off Xfree, it's being more actively developed and improved, and it uses a better license. There's no reason not to use it.

Ya ...

imho, i find it best to build drivers for devices you know you need at boot time directly into the kernel, or use the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file to load the modules, and not even bothering to have coldplug at all.

For what its worth I second this :). If your going to have the ...

I have a similar partitioning scheme on my laptop (Compaq v2000) with the Windows XP sp2 partition on hda1 without problems, so I don't think this is your problem. Have you reinstalled Windows after Grub install?

I would see what windows is running at startup and if you run any third party software ...

Sorry my reply took so long, I went to sleep.

Ok, putting ">=gnome-base/gnome-2.8.1" in /etc/portage/package.mask didn't seem to work at first, then I realized that I was doing an emerge with 'deep'. Doing just a "emerge -upv" shows that gnome is not listed anymore. Since --deep is supposed to ...

Did you format /boot? Delete the old kernel? There is an option in the kernel (2.6.x at least) that allows you to "embed" the config data in the kernel so you can get it back out later. Or might you have the old .config file backed up?

I know what I've said is obvious stuff and if you had an old ...

Any netwok settings that you will need to do should be the same as those you do during install. The things I know you should check just off the top of my head:

1. Make sure your kernel is configured for your network hardware. (module ...

'emerge -uD world' excluding 'package'

I just did an 'emerge sync' and 'emerge -uDav' and as is the norm there is a huge list of things to update :) I would like to go ahead and update everything except the gnome-2.8.1 stuff. So my question is, can I tell portage to 'lock' packages at a specific version so they don't get updated? Perhaps ...

The problem you're having could be only with the kernel sources you're using, you might want to try one of the experimentals, i.e. nitro, mm, ck, love, something. You can TRY to boot to the kernel from the live cd, but that's likely going to present a number of problems, and you can't test ...

As suggested above you should disallow all access first and then expicitly state what will be allowed. Here's what I have in my iptables script:

# All packets that are not explicitly accepted should be dropped.
/bin/echo -e ' [Dropping] All packets not explicitly accepted'
/sbin/iptables -P INPUT ...
