[RESOLVED] XFree vs. Xorg

Why use Xorg instead of XFree86? Is it just because of anger since XFree86 isn't "GPL compatible"?

If I'm not mistaking X.org has lots of the old XF86 devs on, is more updated and
maybe most importantly, is free (as far as I know).

XFree86 is free too.

Xorg forked off Xfree, it's being more actively developed and improved, and it uses a better license. There's no reason not to use it.

All forking reasons aside, the most important argument is that X.org is supported by Gentoo (and most other distros) while XFree is not.

Ya, they are both "free" but the XF86 people changed thier license and many people in the Linux community did not like it (!= GPL). Here is a news article that has the scoop: http://www.internetnews.com/fina-news/a ... hp/3338031

the biggest thing is that xfree was getting stagnant, and xorg is moving nicely.
