update the entire system (portage tree and packages)
I know that using "emerge --sync" updates the portage tree, but is there a way to update all the packages already installed in your system that you emerged awhile ago?? Or would you have to unmerge them and then emerge them all over again? Thanks.

You can do updates which handles it for you. Try "emerge -uDav world". You should really read the emerge man page too.
