windows killed grub!

i have a ibm thinkpad t40p and my partition scheme is

hda1 windows XP pro sp1a
hda2 swap
hda3 /boot
hda4 /
i am using grub as my boot loader and as long as i boot to gentoo grub will keep on working, but when i boot to windows and then reboot it says
GRUB loading stage 1.5 then it will reboot and start all over again,.
if i reset the my mbr to grub it will work again as long as i don't go into windows. thx for any comments

im not sure if this will do anything but try puting windows under hda4 and boot under hda1, swap hda2 and / under hda3. It shouldnt have any affect but hey it just might work

I have a similar partitioning scheme on my laptop (Compaq v2000) with the Windows XP sp2 partition on hda1 without problems, so I don't think this is your problem. Have you reinstalled Windows after Grub install?

I would see what windows is running at startup and if you run any third party software like virus scanners turn them off. You might try to boot into safe mode to see if the same things happen just to rule out some things.

i tired safe mode and it still does the same stuff, i also haven't reinstalled windows. so thx for the ideas

I'm really interested in learning more about this problem as I have a number of machines duel booting. If you find a solution or cause please post it! I did some searching and while I have not found a solution here are some links that may be helpful:

I'm also interested in this. I'm dualbooting XP with Linux and it's working fine, but if I were to reinstall XP (want to make a minimal install without internet connected used mainly for games), I'm sure I would experience something similar.

I have a similar setup on a Toshiba Tecra A3.

sda1 Win XP Pro sp1a ntfs ~20Gb
sda2 /boot ext2 ~200Mb
sda3 swap ~2Gb
sda4 / ext3 ~18Gb

I have 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 and grub 1.96. I boot back and forth and have never experienced the problem you describe. The only thing that comes to mind is you are not running one of those stupid boot sector antivirus BIOS' or similar software are you?
