'emerge -uD world' excluding 'package'

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

'emerge -uD world' excluding 'package'

I just did an 'emerge sync' and 'emerge -uDav' and as is the norm there is a huge list of things to update :) I would like to go ahead and update everything except the gnome-2.8.1 stuff. So my question is, can I tell portage to 'lock' packages at a specific version so they don't get updated? Perhaps in a /etc/portage/package.* file?

Sorry in advance if this has been answered elseware.

Yes. I believe in /etc/portage/package.masks you would put:

Code: Select all

>=gnome-base/gnome-2.8.1
Somebody correct my syntax if it's wrong :P

Make portage thinks that gnome-2.8.1 is already emerged.

Code: Select all

echo "gnome-base/gnome-2.8.1" >> /etc/portage/profile/package.provided
Not sure,because i dont have gnome installed to test it,so maybe there more packages to add to the package.provided.

am i correct in assuming that the first solution recommended would work to block the emergence of all future versions of gnome, while the second would stop working once a version of gnome newer than the one listed were to hit the portage tree?

Sorry my reply took so long, I went to sleep.

Ok, putting ">=gnome-base/gnome-2.8.1" in /etc/portage/package.mask didn't seem to work at first, then I realized that I was doing an emerge with 'deep'. Doing just a "emerge -upv" shows that gnome is not listed anymore. Since --deep is supposed to bypass the dependency tree this makes sense. It seems that using --deep would mean you have to put every installed package in package.mask?

I can't seem to make this have any effect:

Code: Select all

echo "gnome-base/gnome-2.8.1" >> /etc/portage/profile/package.provided
