The thing I hate most about Linux is the way files are scattered around, all the executables are in /.../bin, the man pages are in /usr/share/man, the docs are in /usr/share/doc, etc. etc. etc. All very ugly. I don't care what everyone else here says, I'll be using it on my computer :)

I prefer Gnome. It's much simpler, easier to use. I prefer the it-just-works mentality to you-can-configure-the-crap-out-of-it-so-what-do-imperfections-matter? one of KDE. However, I prefer ROX-Filer, so I've turned Nautilus off. I also find Gnome apps look better than KDE ones; there's something ...

Re: mt: license costs

Sorry, this may be obvious.

MOvable type charges I think $150 for a commercial use license. Still not bad, but why bother if free alternatives are available?

MT attracts people with the free for personal use licence. Said people fall in love with it and become used to it. Said people move to a ...

I was about to come here and post a thread called 'Gentooer accidentally stuck in a Debian world'. It has not been proofread and reads more-or-less like my thoughts rather than like something ...

I recommend either looking at quark (which, as I understand it, simply sits in your system tray) or using something like RhythmBox or MusicBox, modifying it if ...

I've since discovered MusicBox, a ROX app (and so it's GTK2, and simple). It occasionally crashes, but being GTK2 more than makes up for this. You can see a screenshot at its website or on my website.

I've been having problems with other GTK apps so I'm emerge --deep -u world on stable rather than ~ (after doing that, should I emerge -e world to get everything compiled against those libs?). Hopefully that will help.

I don't think that will help. And emerge -e world simply re-emerges all ...

It still crashes on startup for me (before it's shown its gui, even). Try running it as root, see if it crashes then. I had that problem, but I don't remember the remedy. I'm successfully using net-rhythmbox btw.

Gpdf isn't there yet (doesn't seem to support anti-aliasing fonts, which makes many look incredibly ugly), and it has jumpscroll too with the scrollwheel, so I'll still be using Xpdf for a while. (I'm not complaining about Xpdf---it supports everything I ...

: Is GCONF a database or a directory structure with real files in it?

The latter..

I thought Gconf was more like an API: Anyone can write a new backend and a new frontend for it, so that you could, for example, make it an SQL database if you wanted.

While I don't use Gnome per se, I hate apps ...

I have 512 Mio RAM and a 768 Mio swap partition.

Yes, MS Office 2006 will require a minimum of 3GB RAM and a Pentium5, 64-bit running at 6GHz, and that's only enough for you to open a new document.

And so OpenOffice.org 2 will require a minimum 4 Gio RAM and a 64-bit CPU at at least 10 GHz to be ...

No. I will not pay money for Linux. If the choice was pay money for Linux or don't use Linux, I'd use Windows XP Home, as I have a legal licence for it, or (for preference) FreeBSD if it has support for my hardware.

I find KDE apps to be ugly and much too complicated---I gave Konqueror a shot a few days ago and wow . GTK2, OTOH, is much better looking, and has nicer apps written for it. As far as pure Qt-apps go, the only one I know I've used is Opera, and it has a sucky interface too.

So my perspective is ...
