Gnome users : Which should be default browser?

  • Quote

Post by ed0n » Sat Sep 13, 2003 4:53 pm

I made this thread for Gnome users .
We know that the gnome default browser has changed it was galeon now its epiphany.
I voted for epiphany cuz it seams a bit faster for me .
It's also translated in my language (albanian) that's why I started liking it more than Galeon .

You forgot Atlantis !

Also, epiphany is just a fork off the galeon 1.3 code base. I prefer galeon because it has more features.

Haven't used Epiphany yet (masked), so I chose Galeon. I've used many other browsers and always end up back at Galeon.

I'm anxious to see their next version.

Looked at the Atlantis page... could be interesting. How "minimal" of a browser is it? For example, Dillo is minimal, but also minimally useful.

Not in portage either. May have to see if I can cook up an ebuild.

EDIT: Here's the ebuild I came up with.
Naturally, it is an unofficial ebuild. The sources don't seem to be available, so that makes it a bit useless IMO.

Warning: The license for Atlantis is listed as "Other/Proprietary License" on the Gnome website.

The ebuild contains LICENSE="GPL2" which is incorrect. I just put it there while I was working on it. Also, I get a segfault error when I try to run it,
so no idea how good it'll work. Create a net-www/atlantis-bin directory in your local portage (PORTDIR_OVERLAY). Save as atlantis-bin-0.1.2.ebuild.

WOW!!! i've just completed gnome 2.4 installation. It's fast, beautifull and .... perfect

i really LOVE epiphany, although there's one small issue. In mozilla firebird i could open a new tab with my middle moue button. epiphany opens a new window by default. Does anyone know how to change this behaviour?

Is it really that great?

Is epiphany really all it's cracked up to be? I've been a phoenix/firebird user for a long time and have been very happy with it.

I like firebird because it runs on windows as well as linux. My wife, while very pro-linux, runs XP and many of my co-workers do as well. I really like having the same apps on all platforms at home and at work, so I have always gone the moz route.

I'm emerging epiphany now, but it will probably take some time. Anyone care to offer any opinions while I wait for it to build?

Ebuild added to previous post. I was going to create a seperate thread, then I noticed Atlantis' licensing. Not worth drawing additional attention to it IMO.

For those wondering about Atlantis' exact licencing, see here:
Copyright:
----------

atlantis with all its released files are fully copyrighted by [...] Ali Akcaagac.
It's not allowed to re-use any components or files inside other projects
without written permission.
(Edited so as not to mislead.)

People may want to email Ali about the terms to see if it can't be released under a more liberal licence.

Epiphany is great and blends in much better with Gnome2 than Firebird. There are two things that irritate me about it, though.

First of all, start typing a URL, then try to tab through the auto-complete list. It doesn't work. This is something I'm very used to from using IE and Mozilla.

Second of all, escape doesn't close the find on this page dialog. I often search through pages by doing ctrl-f, enter search term, enter till I find what I want, escape to close search dialog.

With those two things changed, I'd use Epiphany over Firebird.

Another vote for Epiphany here!

For the longest time I wasn't impressed with Epiphany, but that's back during the .6* versions. By .8* I was hooked. Compared to galeon, there really isn't THAT much of a difference. I believe Gnome switched from Galeon as default because the development has been going so slow.

Firedbird is great though! /me wishes firebird libraries could be used with eppihany :D

 Just when I'm about to give in and emerge another masked ebuild, I notice that epiphany requires mozilla 1.4. I've grown tired of emerging mozilla, so it'll have to wait.

Long term, I'm looking for a non-mozilla based browser that is good. I don't like Opera, so thanks anyway. I'm not aware of any others that are useful though.

I have found the user interface in Epiphany to be much more responsive and fast than Firebird. This is because it is a straight up GTK2 application.

The bookmarks system with epiphany is different also. Everything is divided up into topics. One link can be in multiple topics. Instead of having to go through a long list to find a certain bookmark, you can just type in a keyword from that link. For example, I want to go to the Urban Terror website, I can just type "Terror" or "Urban", and it will show up as an option. Very cool!

As far as I know, Galeon was dropped because it seemed that the devlopers had no intention of ahereing to the HIG.

MozillaFirebird and Mozilla are not gnome applications.

Now for my opinion: Epiphany rocks!

That HIG is the worst thing to happen to Gnome IMO. I don't like 2 nearly as much as 1.

hmm, this is better, but not perfect yet. I don't like to have a tab open all te times. I want it only when i need it.

Say.. the "tabbing behaviour" of mozilla and firebird. Maye i should make it an feature request.

anyway thanks for the suggestion :D

Posting from XP a.t.m. so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure this is an option that can be chosen through the gconf editor.

Galeon is a browser for power users, Epiphany is a simple HIGified browser for the Gnome2 desktop.

An exaggerated comparison would be to ask whether Mozilla should be bundled with Windows instead of Internet Explorer.
