Gentoo desktops for August '03

  • Quote

Post by helmers » Sun Aug 03, 2003 8:10 am

Hi all.

I am a neowin.net regular, and since they have had great success with their monthly "post-your-desktop" thread, I wanted to create one too. So most of the rules are copied from them, but I am sure you can live with that.
  • If you plan to img-embed your desktop, please try to keep it at/under 1024x768 and under 60k (It's recommended that you link it, externally)
  • Stay within the board rules, no matter how yummy you may believe it to be
  • If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
  • The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post images of a pornographic or otherwise provocative nature. We do not support a babes forum and neither will we in an unofficial capacity. Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
  • The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Ruleset.
In the interests of keeping the thread on topic it is strongly urged that you format your posts in the following order:

Widget Style: Name/where you got it(with link would be nice)

Wallpaper: Name/where you got it(with link would be nice)

Icons: Name/where you got it(with link would be nice)

Programs: Name/where you got it(with link would be nice)

Nah, that's okay. It was just a little embaressing not to have it all set when I just told everyone to post as much info as they could.
But if you have it at hand, you can always pm me, and I'll update the post.

The important thing is just to bother with typing in the info, some just type it in gedit or nano and include in in the screenshot. A small thumbnail screenie(click to expand) would probably be nice as well, so that you wouldn't have to click them all.

The idea is that hardcore GNU/Linux people can get some ideas on how to get a yummy looking desktop.

Here's mine: Clickety-click

Widget style: Mosfet's Liquid Widgets (yummy - in portage). I'm using the 'Liquid' color theme included in the Mosfet package, though I changed the titlebar colours slightly to be a little less... fischer-price'y... ;)
The window decoration is High Performance Liquid (also included with Mosfet's), but I'm looking for better alternatives... anyone?

Wallpaper: One of my own creations - can be found in my gallery at deviantART, http://saulsnes.deviantart.com/. I played a bit with saturation blending to make it fit into the color theme...

Icons: Crystal 0.9, from http://www.linuxcult.com/.

Programs: Konsole, plus SuperKaramba theme 'tmon' from KDE Look.org (modified to fit my hardware configuration).

My Desktop

Nothing special here =) Just XFCE4, with the Gnome icon set, Galaxy window decoration (say what you like about Redhat, they do have some nice artwork =P), and the Smooth-Posh GTK2 theme...

Running currently are gnome-terminal , Totem, and Gaim, with Evolution 1.4 on the second workspace (can see it in the pager =P)...wallpaper is The Touch by Wirestyle, over at deviantart.com.

Just switched over from KDE to XFCE4, it took me a bit to get GTK2-based apps for everything I did, but I'm liking the lighter-weight look...it's funny, I'm essentially running Gnome, minus Gnome. =) The icons in the panel are, in order: Nautilus, Abiword, GIMP, Totem/Xine, Gnome-Terminal, Galeon (cvs), and Evolution...

WM style: ApeDosMil (grab it at www.art.gnome.org)

Wallpaper: My own OSX graphite(Windows mod)

Icons: Ximian industrial (ximian-artwork)

Programs: GKrellM with the "TigSteel" theme

Wow, that's a large trash-can icon, Helmers! o_O

Heh...avatar fights...there should be some Java applet in the forums that lets you play a stripped-down fighting game with stick figures, with your avatar on top as a head... ^_^

I decided to try fluxbox for a while. So far so good. I like it. Here...

Flux theme: Sephiroth, slightly altered to be golden.
gkrellm2 theme: CoplandOS, slightly altered to be golden.
Wallpaper: I think it's from Deskmod, unfortunately Deskmod doesn't seem to be up right now.

Bad thing is, when I open a web page with a white background, it just about blinds me because of how dark everything else is. I had to color some GTK themes and make some custom KDE colors to match the black/gold colors, but it seems worth it. Most of the colors are based on the Black Marble 2 GTK2 theme. Gorilla icons go well with these colors, I've found. The Phoenity Darkness Firebird theme goes well with it too. I think I spend too much time on things like this. :?

KDE 3.1.3 Aquafied, sortof. (resolution: 1152x864)
http://foxen.mine.nu/mydesktop.png

Running KDE 3.1.3 w/ slimmed down Konqueror (appearance-wise, at least). I like my desktop clean, so I almost never keep any icons there, and truth to be told I typically find it easier to launch programs via KDE's "run command"-dialog (ALT-F2) than via the K menu anyway. It's just faster typing things in. :)

I'm using a matching Aqua theme for GTK/GTK2 applications (mainly Gimp and XChat). Can't wait to get my hands on a larger monitor, though... 19 inches of goodness would be nice.

... No, not that kind of inches. :P

Window decoration: Aqua OS K (Non-gradient version)

Wallpaper: Got it from the "Lunatic" StyleXP package. Don't know where they got it from, though.
