I don't know. I've pretty much become a fan of stock gentoo-sources now. Most of the good desktop stuff that used to need -mm's kernel is in mainstream now.

I'm currently playing around with something similar,
Heres a couple of thoughts:

I'm using openvz (although vserver is another option*) to provide the chrooting (I view containers as a heavyweight chroot rather than lightweight virtualisation). Xen could also be an option, although at a slight ...

oh, it does. Although Since my box does more ripping than playing I don't know whether it works under mplayer/xine - certainly works ok on windows though, so its quite possible.

AFAIK there isn't an AAC or MP4 Plugin for xmms in portage.

I have an ebuild for an aac plugin in bugzilla, but it won't play mp4 or m4a files.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=54351&highlight=aac

The author of the above plugin has written an mp4 plugin, but i'm having trouble creating a ...

Although the IUSE of fluxbox is only nls, it inherits kda and gnome from commonbox... This might explain why it didin;t admit to this when querired (a bug in portage?)

Some possibilities:

hmmm. had you previous installed any masked packages? I'm thinking gtk/gtk+/gtk2 as if you had then emerge -u world will have downgraded them (use -Uu to stop that)

Is it only xmms and zinf that have problems? and are they your only audio programs - if they are, it could be ...

xmms aac plugin ebuild

Ok, its my first serious (i.e. not minor version change) attempt at an ebuild, which was inspired by my ipod now accepting aac files....

Comments are most certainly welcome.

Also no in a fundamental difference of ethos. There isn't anything like a version of portage for windows (afaik), and likely won't be, simply because the vast majority of windows programs (and more importantly, the programs that people use ) are closed-source. As internet distribution continues to ...

Aye acoustic padding is the way to go. You can get a practically silent HD by buying one of the quiet ones and you can get (i forget from where, possibly acasa) what is effectively a 5.25 mount for a 3.5 drive that surrounds it with foam padding - it really cuts out the high frequencys, (read whines ...

I can't speak as an authority on PCI, but assuming they are even vaguely like the AGP versions in terms of relative perfocmance, take the ATI - the gf4mx is bad, really bad. (and the 9000 is quite o/c-able if you want that extra performance)

if you want to run a version not in portage, emerge it using --onlydeps first - that will make sure you have the latest versions of its dependancys, then install it by hand (or better yet, roll your own ebuild!)

Try using a minimal CFLAGS in your make.conf (something like

also, when you do emerge -p planshift, does it claim to have a version installed?

Further to previous points, depending on what you wish to do, you may want to consider sticking to standard wine rather than the delights of the various flavours of winex - I find wine to be much better for games that support openGL (wc3 yay), but since you can have both installed I would (unless ...
