fluxbox + idesk + docker (from openbox)

  • Quote

Post by digitalsy » Sat May 03, 2003 4:51 am

I can't seem to get all these apps to co-exist nicely. I mean I can run fluxbox and then load idesk and docker, that works perfectly. However i'm absolutely STUMPED as to how to get idesk and docker to load up when i login through gdm and fluxbox loads.

I've tried the following:
. adding idesk and docker to .xsession and .xinitrc
. adding idesk and docker to /etc/X11/Sessions/fluxbox (shot in the dark)

that's about it, i mean...it should work either of those 2 ways right?

I did notice something really strange, when using .xsession absolutely nothing worked, when using .xinitrc nothing worked but when i went to exit fluxbox, my idesk icons showed up and idesk i guess just loaded upon exit. (the only way to get out of X then is CTRL-ALT-BSPACE)

I'd really like to get idesk and docker working on startup so I can actually use a FAST wm...

Appreciate any input/help.

I've never tried to load those programs at startup, but I load fluxter, wxmms and gkrellm2. I edited the

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/Sessions/fluxbox
file and added the programs I wanted to run like this

Code: Select all

fluxter -w &
wmxmms &
gkrellm2 &
/usr/bin/fluxbox
Try putting your programs in there if you want, but they will run for all users.

well if youre using 'startx' then the file you want to edit is .xinitrc. it sounds like youre not putting the '&' after the commands you want.

the wm has to be the last line in xinitrc and all progs you want loaded have to hjave the '&' after
pizza.

For gdm, you have to edit the /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/fluxbox file. That is the file used to startup fluxbox, the same usage as a .xinitrc.

The differences between having to use the .xinitrc and not using it never seem to get explained.

If you use the XSESSION var at the end of your /etc/rc.conf then X uses the /etc/X11/Sessions/<wm> file to init X.

If you don't have XSESSION set to anything, then you're probably using a Display Manager (GDM, KDM, XDM) or $HOME/.xinitrc.

thanks for the clarification nbrown and timmfin (and everyone else!) both adding /usr/bin/idesk & and /usr/bin/docker & to /etc/X11/gdm/Session/fluxbox works now! both entries are placed before the /usr/bin/fluxbox entry

Many thanks!

Well i tested a few things out, and for some reason I added a new icon for vmware, and double clicking it won't work most of the time unless i click my mouse buttons like a maniac...then one out of 10times it will load.

Are there double click delay settings somewhere in the idesk conf?

What about single click? I tried that but it didn't work either.

Hope this thread is still being viewed....

just out of curiosity why are you using docker in fluxbox? Doesn't the slit already handle kde 3 tray stuff? Or does this docker do iconified stuff too?
Umm, yeah.

Not sure why he is, but for me, either flux's icon dock support is broken, or it doesn't handle "GNOME" docks.

GAIM's icon doesn't appear. Xmms' Icon doesnt' appear.

Docker's the only one that'll work for them.

Or, it's borked on both my Gentoo and FreeBSD installs. (Both with KDE support enabled. Explcitly. Heck, on the Gentoo box, I manually editted the ebuild to ensure it'd pass "I WANT KDE" to the configure script just to make sure.)

There's a Flux option for gaim > preferences > plugins > system tray icon?

Otherwise, I stand by it showing up in docker, and not flux.

you might have to compile fluxbox with

Code: Select all

USE="kde gnome" emerge fluxbox
so that it will handle kde/gnome dockapps

That fixed it when I couldn't get licq docking correctly...dunno about gaim though.

USE="kde gnome"???

  • Quote

Post by nbrown » Tue May 06, 2003 5:51 pm

Maybe I'm confused, but I don't think

Code: Select all

USE="kde gnome" emerge fluxbox
does anything. When I ran emerge fluxbox -vp, this is the output I got:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b$ emerge fluxbox-0.1.14-r1.ebuild -uvp

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!

bash-2.05b$ emerge fluxbox-0.1.14-r1.ebuild -vp

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] x11-wm/fluxbox-0.1.14-r1 +nls

bash-2.05b$

Is this right, or does the USE="kde gnome" actually do something for a fluxbox emerge?

[EDIT:]
I was mistaken.
Although the IUSE of fluxbox is only nls, it inherits kda and gnome from commonbox... This might explain why it didin;t admit to this when querired (a bug in portage?)
