aangezien de main page momenteel down is, kan 'k hun specs & requirements niet checken, maar zelf heb 'k reeds jaren een account bij #shell.be, voor gelijkaardige doeleinden: nmap tests van m'n WAN poort etc ...

Geen idee of dit volledig aan je behoefte kan voorzien though, irc bv is er niet meer ...

spci: command not found. 's "lspci", somehow the L got deleted :)
Anyway, you have to emerge 'pciutils first in order to execute this command.
ill be happy to check my kernel config, but I'm not really sure what I'll have to look for :(

That command does not return anything...
This means that Linux has not been able to activate any network card, with the provided kernel-options you specified.
Its onboard and I saw some onboard driver installed in the kernel :)

I don't know what seventh/root refers to.

I'm guessing seventh is his normal user and the 'seventh/root' line means he gets the same result for both accounts.

I don't see making adjustments to fstab would help.

It would/could if he accidently tries to mount his root partition as read ...

I still tho, don't know where to get rcs, snort, and sshd.
in the "home-server" howto, /everything/ is explained ("emerge ntop, emerge net-analyzer/rrdtool, etc etc ").
Mind you that some of these packages require ~x86, not stable.

I also still have question no.2 unanswered :(

Ook iets wat je nooit moet doen: via SSH een firewall instaleren, zeker niet op een headless setup :roll:
Zoals ik ooit in m'n kruipkelder mocht kruipen opzoek naar m'n debian server toen 'k mezelf buitensloot door met 3 verschillende pc's portsentry te willen testen 8O :D

Installeer portsentry naast je firewall, dan hoef je je geen zorgen te maken over die open poorten. Ze zullen er nog steeds zijn, maar pretty secure :)

PS: if you do, don't nmap yourself!!! ;)
