logon problem

  • Quote

Post by piva.francesco » Mon Jun 19, 2006 1:24 am

Hello all !

Last time I have reboot my pc, I cannot log anymore into my gentoo system.
When I put the username: seventh / root it doesn't ask me the password and it asks me to put again the username, like if i have mistanken my password.
I think it is because the filesystem is mounted in Readonly. Although I do not know how to solve this.
I thought that the best way of solving this, was on booting with a Gentoo 2005.1 livecd, in order to chroot the mounted filesystem and to modify the /etc/fstab file.

But i am not sure if it is the best way solving this problem.

Can someone tell me how can I know if the real problem is this or no?

Thanks a lot helping me, a quick answer would be apreciated.

Cheers

hmm. 1st.
when you get to login, are you in a graphical login?
2nd.
I don't know what seventh/root refers to.
Have you tried logging in as root?
Does it succeed as root.
Probably no quick fix to this. It's not clear what's going wrong yet.

I don't see making adjustments to fstab would help.
did you by chance just newly install something when last in the system?

I'm guessing seventh is his normal user and the 'seventh/root' line means he gets the same result for both accounts.

It would/could if he accidently tries to mount his root partition as read-only, as he mentionned, after maybe altering /etc/fstab or something.

But true, as you mentionned, it's too early to conclude anything.

piva.francesco, could you show us your fstab? And give more details about the system: newly installed? etc-update after a huge -uD world, etc etc?
Anyway, booting with a live-cd, chrooting into your gentoo system will never do any harm as long as you keep your head cool :) (that is, as long as your don't rm -rf your root or remove your passwd file, etc etc ... ;) )

Well actually I do not know what happened with my machine.
I just rebooted my machine and I do not know what happened. Now the thing is that I cannot Logon my machine anymore, I log on usually in console machine.

I have removed this two programs before rebooting, long time ago, because it did not allow me to do a successfull "emerge -uD worl".
utempter
faad2

and another one but I cannot remeber it's name.

what other information can I add to this in order to solve my problem ?

please help me this problem it's driving me crazy !

thanks a lot for helping me,

I am on my backup PC 20h/day, please don't hesitate asking me any other info on my machine.

Cheers

What you want to do is boot into your LiveCD and chroot into your install. From there, unmerge pam-login and emerge shadow. That should fix things.

Ok,
I have no pam-login installed in my machine. Although I cannot emerge because it is not configured to be connected to the net when you boot in a LiveCD.
Is it a problem if I do not have the program pam-login installed ? Shall I install it ?

How can I make my eth0 connection work ? I never know how I can make to make it work

Thanks a lot

Cheers

net-setup eth0 should detect your NIC and automagically configure your network settings for you from outside the chroot environment. Remember to copy over the /etc/resolv.conf file over to /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf (or wherever you mount your install) before chrooting as well. If you don't have pam-login, then just emerge shadow and you should be fine.

I have done what you told me although I still cannot emerge the thing.
Do I have to mount the proc ?
because when I make ifconfig I see that it isn't connected to the internet although I have copied the resolv.conf on the mount of gentoo

... I am so lame, I am sorry but I am really no good at this.

And your help is really precious for me

Thanks a lot

Cheers

In addition to mounting your partitions (/, /boot, etc), you do need to mount /dev and /proc before you chroot. You do that by

Code: Select all

mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc

Beside the / , proc and dev what shall I mount ?

Because i have tried all the manipulation that you told me to do and still it doesn't work.

first of all I mount the root file system, then i copy the resolv.conf of the LiveCD on the mounted filesystem
then I mount proc and dev
then I chroot

but still I cannot emerge, because it tells me it can resolve the domain.
and I cannot ping when I have chrooted.

Thanks

Cheers

Before you chroot, please post the results of ifconfig. After you chroot, please post the results of /etc/fstab.

francesco; you are getting there. keep posting the info that nilecrib asks for.
If you can manage it, add this info.
You have pointed out you usually login at a console. That helps.
Now tell me if you have tried logging in as route into the system.
If not, try it, and tell the result.

I am entering this from my gentoo system. I only just got back into it.
I was similarly locked at at login and it has just been solved.
Your situation is looking more and more similar, but itś too early to tell if the cause for you is the same.
It was something very unexpected.

If you can login as root, well and good,
If not, use the livecd and chroot into the system with the instructions nilecrib gave you.

Then enter this line
ls -ld /home /
and post the result.
