Install Gentoo from Windows

  • Quote

Post by idtt2s » Wed Jun 28, 2006 12:23 am

I'm in a Windows environment, and I want to install Gentoo. I don't want to boot from livecd, etc., so I want a way to install Gentoo without leaving Windows.

Why do you *need* to be in Windows?

But I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying you can use VMWare to install on your drive, and not your virtual drive. But you would have to configure xorg and your choice of GUI from the terminal.

It's possible to use colinux to do the install.

so:
*in wich os are you (windows 2000 or xp)
*are you shure you want gentoo and not another linux distribution that can be installed within windows(boot from a loop...) and that run inside colinux
*i am curious...so why do you want or need to install linux within windows(no cd recorder?)

you'll need colinux for some linux tools that are not avaliable on windows

by the way do you intend to use a loop because it will be:
*very interesting
*otherwise you'll need some partitioning and you'll need to leave your windows, mabe that can be done with the windows installation cd

Lets see...

I need windows for a game, Starcraft.
I don't mind configuring GUI from the terminal, considering I made a backup of my modified xorg.conf.
I am attempting this out of personal curiosity. And, for a distrobution like Gentoo, I wouldn't mind doing something else during my 50 hours of compilation.

I haven't tried it, personally, but it is supposed to run in WINE so you don't have to keep Windows just for this game.

If you use Knoppix to install Gentoo, you can work with a fully featured KDE environment during the install.

Same with the GLI CD (just don't be tempted to use the installer!).

Just checking, but you're not talking about playing games during compilation, right? :D

I've been trying for a while now, and Starcraft lags (I know, its really sad...).

I've used Knoppix to do so many times; and now, I want to try something different.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I tried that just days ago, the installer failed twice... Does anyone also notice the LiveCD is unbearably slow?

That's the dream :D.

Just install it manually and get an xbox. They are really cheap these day, you can also get a kit that turn it into a fully functional linux box

I wouldn't try it personally. If you can get it to work, compilation will take 10 times as long as starcraft take most of the CPU time. startcraft will run slooowwwwwllllllyyyyyyy and be way too annoying!

I've been able to run hl2 (in dx7) with wine+winetools, so it be doubtfull if sc wouldn't work in wine.

I don't think just because you can run a more graphics intensive game you can run Starcraft. Each game is different, I think I've read about people that couldn't run Starcraft properly but could run Warcraft III smoothly simply because it uses OpenGL.

why not runnning free software games such as the ones based on stratagus?
that would be more simple
you also have some fps such as enxuiz or tremulous

http://stratagus.sourceforge.net/games.shtml

there is also a native port of starcraft using stratagus http://wargus.sourceforge.net/

The easy answer: VMWare Player or (better yet) VMWare Workstation.
But you still need a valid Windows license.

Because they suck, plain and simple...

I also don't see anything about Starcract on the Wargus site. Besides, even if Wargus allowed me to play starcraft, it probably doesn't allow for Battle.net play, which is the only reason I have Starcraft.
