Well, I just did a fresh install from stage 3, and emerged the newest portage/gentoolkit. I'm having the exact same problem as yuza with both etcat -u and equery.

Binary packages

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, if it is I couldnt see it.

I've been thinking about a way of quickly getting Gentoo installed again, should the worst ever happen (ie. I bork my system).

I'm currently thinking the best idea is to make binaries of everything I use, using emerge -B, then burning ...

With this debate, along with others, a popular arguement seems to be "well, if you want binary packages, go away and use another distro".

Well, I don't use gentoo because its source based, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. Infact, I'd rather use a binary distro, but none exist that match up with ...

Long, but fairly painless. (aside from mirror I used being tortoise slow that night....)

Bit disappointed - I'd heard such great things about the Gentoo install, and how you had to be a genius to get it installed.

I dont remember the name of the default config file, but...

You could just "make menuconfig", quickly make sure it is the correct config, then save it as whatever you want.

If you're using Xine, in the input > dvd device, just set it to either /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 or /dev/cdroms/cdrom1, depending on which one is the DVD drive.

You could create a symlink if you want though, and link /dev/dvd to either of those.

mkdir /dev/dvd
ln -s /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /dev/dvd

Thanks for the response.

Actually, it didnt try to install the alsa driver. Maybe portage is smarter than we think. :)

Since I started using 2.6 a few weeks ago, sound has worked fine without having to emerge alsa-lib or re-emerge anything. The reason I started this ...

Kernel ALSA

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but...

I'm using kernel 2.6 with ALSA compiled in. What I'm wondering is, should I be compiling apps (for example, xine) with the ALSA USE flag set, or is this only required when ALSA is installed as a module?

The reason I ask is, the description of the USE ...

I had a similar issue with 2.4.20r8.

I never found out what it was, and it doesnt seem to happen anymore since I started using 2.6.

From what I could tell though, it was attempting to load modules I didnt have installed and that I didnt need. 8O

It had no effect on system though, everything ...

You need to enable certain things in kernel 2.6, otherwise the console wont work. I had a similar problem with 2.6. I thought I'd compiled everything I needed, but eterm just crashed whenever I started it.

I think what needs to be enabled is UNIX98 PTY support, or something similar. Then, in pseudo ...

Have you recompiled your kernel lately? Or changed anything with hdparm?

I had a similar startup time with Firebird (during the first run), and the problem was that I forgot to select the support for my IDE driver when making my kernel.

Re: Not a support forum

Before messing with the mbr, it might be wise to backup anything important, on your first partition at least.

I recently did what I think you want to do, and lost my windows partition which was on hda1. :P

Why do you want to format the MBR anyway? Whats wrong with it?

You could just (while outside X) run xf86config again, this time selecting a different resolution. When its done, just edit XF86Config to include the nvidia drivers.

"emerge artwiz-fonts" should install them fine. I dont think you need to edit anything, but I might be wrong.

I'd also suggest the MS core fonts. Websites look much better with them installed. :)

They're masked however, so:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge corefonts

To search for others you might ...

I use XFCE4, and I have -gnome -kde -qt4 -arts set. I dont think I use gtk at all either, as I think its only for gtk2 support, which I dont use.

Some apps seem to *need* qt4, which they'll install anyway AFAIK even if you have -qt4 set, so I wouldnt worry about it.

XFree doesnt have any of those ...

Well, the install docs are good. They guide you through every step, while at the same time remaining quite short and unscary (unlike others docs Ive tried reading). Plus there's the (usually) very helpful forum guru's to help you during and after installation.

Then there is Portage. Huge selection ...
