Want to save downloaded files for a fresh install

  • Quote

Post by dalek » Thu Dec 11, 2003 2:32 am

I have been having trouble with Gentoo locking up and can't figure out what the problem is. I have downloaded some rather large programs, open office being one of them, and would like to save them for the new install. What all do I need to save and will the new install see the files?

I found some of the files in /usr/portage/distfiles. Are there any others that I need to save? I have plenty of space so I'll save whatever needed.

I like Gentoo a lot. I'm not giving up here. Please stick with me here.

Thanks in advance. Couldn't find anything in a search.

:D :D :D :D

edit: Sorry so long. Been sick with the flu. I think I'm going to see the Doctor. Maybe anyway. I can't seem to shake this thing.

/usr/portage/distfiles is all you need to save. Yes the new install will use them if they are there.

Thanks PowerFactor for the help. I'll start working on that right away.

Still can't figure out what went wrong with my current install. I did something though.

Thanks again.

Glad I can save that Open Office. 180MBs and took two nights to download. Whew!

I would also like to save the config file that it uses to compile the kernel. Does anyone know which file that is? Is it the makefile or some other. I have the 2.6 kernel in case it is different. I had to use that one for the hardware sensors.

Thanks again.

I dont remember the name of the default config file, but...

You could just "make menuconfig", quickly make sure it is the correct config, then save it as whatever you want.

kernel config file is here depending on how you installed the source:
/usr/src/linux/.config
/usr/src/linux-beta/.config

This is only for the people using genkernel, otherwise this directory doesn't exist.

OK, this is not going well. I have started the reinstall and it won't see those files that I have already downloaded. I actually saved the entire portage and distfile directories. I tried it with a couple of different files. I had the new test kernel and Open Office. It won't install either of them.

Do I need to do some command for it to see those or something? I looked and they are there.

Thanks for the help.

I did a emerge sync and it works now.

I need to do a etc-update. This is what started the trouble last time, I think. What is the best way to do this update? What files should not be changed? Can I post them here and ask for advice on the changes? This is what I got this time:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# etc-update
Scanning Configuration files...
The following is the list of files which need updating, each
configuration file is followed by a list of possible replacement files.
1) /etc/DIR_COLORS
/etc/._cfg0000_DIR_COLORS

/etc/._cfg0000_dispatch-conf.conf
3) /etc/fstab
/etc/._cfg0000_fstab

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

From the list you have there all of them should be updated except for:

/etc/group
/etc/fstab
/etc/rc.conf

Just select option 1 from the merge menu for all the others and 2 for these.

OK, I updated the rest and left those three alone. That would have really screwed up my fstab. Glad you pointed that out.

Now to update the rest of the system. I may post some more etc-update stuff later. I like being up to date. Gentoo makes it pretty easy. I just need to get rid of this "newbie" stuff that sticks to me so well.

Now to go search and see what the rc-conf file is used for. :? Just curious.

Thanks for the help.

uh oh. It started locking up again. Got part way through emerge gkrellm and died. It did it three times. This thing runs fine with Mandrake. i have had it run for weeks.

Any ideas what could cause this? What am I doing wrong here? Something in the kernel maybe? It does it in 2.4 and 2.6. Should I start a new thread?

Me confused???

It could be one of those APIC and/or ACPI problems from which many nforce2 boards seem to suffer. Try to disable it in your kernel or boot with the noapic, nolapic and acpi=off parameters.
Please read our FAQ Forum, it answers many of your questions.

Hmmmmm. I noticed when I added that to Gentoo that Mandrake has it disabled too. May be on to something. <scratches head>

Thanks. Updating Mandrake a bit while I have this really fast 28.8K connection. I usually only get 24K. I think I'll go have a good cry now.

I need DSL.

Well the 'acpi=off' didn't help I'll try the other now. I also changed the fstab options for / and it didn't help either.

I did notice that every time I do the command

Code: Select all

hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
that that is when it locks up. I'm going to try one of the other drives next, like hdd or something.

I'm reiserfs for 'root' and this is the current line in fstab.

Code: Select all

/dev/hda9 / reiserfs	notail,rw 0 0
It was

Code: Select all

/dev/hda9 / reiserfs	noatime,rw 0 0
Anything wrong with that? If so, I can create a partition, move the data over and change it to ext3 or something and move it back. I just want this thing to work right ya know.

Thanks for the help. I'll report back later on the other do hicky. I assume noapic goes into the bootloader.

Can't say there is anything wrong with the fstab entry, but using notail destroys the space saving advantage of reiserfs. I use defaults. And yes noapic et al go in grub/lilo.conf.

Well it still locked up with noapic in the bootloader.

What next? I have a 3 lb mini sledge hammer if that will help.

Oh, I'm doing this from command line, not a GUI. I want to make sure there is not a GUI issue. I ran hdparm -Tt and it crashed, again. No errors during boot.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. But you could change the subject of the first post so as to better reflect what the problem is, or ask a mod to split the thread.
