You need GLX, so you need a card that has drivers for it. Read whichever of these applies to you:

So download it. pbweb.x86

Put it in ~/.q3a/pb, make it executable, execute it.

etf is pretty much dead. The devs don't care about the community and it shows.
It had potential though.

I usually play on:

you can fix quake1 by putting the paks in
/usr/share/games/quake-data/id1

quake2 by putting the paks in
/usr/share/games/quake2-data/baseq2

if that fails the game will make a directory in the user's home ~/.quake[2]. as a last resort the paks could be put there in id1/[baseq2]

If the extension is .dm3 then it is incompatible with the current version of q3. Also some mods like OSP or Threewave don't see the demos unless they're in all-caps minus the extension. I've found a few other quirks in how demos work under the Linux port.

which ones do you have the cd for? with some googling quake1 can be found online. quake3 requires a cd-key and cd for the paks.

quake3 has the best graphics 8) and qw is really fun. but the mods for all the versions add variety.

If you're into eye-candy, FuhQuake for sure. Otherwise quakeforge is a nice, simple *nix-focused nq and qw client.

I'll install it and see what's up.

Ok, fuhquake can only see files under it's own directory structure, that is /opt/fuhquake. you'd have to link the textures/ into /opt/fuhquake/id1/textures/. Also the files need to be downloaded into /opt/fuhquake/fortress but you probably don't have write ...

I've compiled quakeforge 0.5.5 on gcc 3.4.3 with no problems. I think it's not fair to say qforge isn't a good qwcl, all I need is crappy graphics and i'm good to go, everything looking like mud is the way to go. I don't need q3's hud gfx or nice textures I'll never appreciate, or huge hollywood ...

Do you mean games-fps/quake1-textures ? Judging from the distfile location I'd say those are for the Team Fortress mod.

I definitely had this problem and what fixed it was adding this line to ~/.q3a/baseq3/autoexec.cfg

seta snddevice "/dev/adsp"

This trick:

echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "quake3.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

Maybe the permissions of /dev ...
