Quake 1 and gfx.wad

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this, but I do use gentoo, so I though it was worth a shot. :) And I can't find the answer anywhere else, anyway.

I've tried two different quake 1 source ports, and they both complain about not being able to find gfx.wad. What is it, and where do I get it?

If you need quake1 for linux try the Quakeforge project. www.quakeforge.net Get quake one from cvs. it's QW and single player. glx sgl software render etc...
They also have Q2 in cvs, but they haven't made a release. It compiled fine but the instalation was a bit tricky! Best part is, no mouse cursor stuck in the middle of my screen.

do i have to buy the cd to get the gfx.wad file?

All I did was emerge quakeforge
$ qw-client-x11
Could not load plugin "/usr/games/lib/quakeforge/console_client.so".
IP address 127.0.0.1:27001
UDP (IPv4) Initialized
Fatal Error: W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad

are there any other gpl 3d-shooters? tux racer is still the best game I've seen.

Nope, but there's no need for one since everything installs into one directory.

i emerged quake3 and quake3-demo, then copied pak0.pak3 into /usr/share/games/quake3/base3hq/

now at least I can play the computer, but it looks like most of the game is disabled (online play, other levels).

I also tried emerging quake3-tremulous, but it seems that has the same problem.

if q3 was released as open source, why are features still disabled?

source: http://icculus.org/quake3/

It's been about 10 years since I played doom/quake/duke3D, brings back memories, up till 2am blasting away.

You are playing the demo and complaining that things are disabled? Buy the game, the game content has NOT been released as open source.

Fine, I understand not getting all of Q3 from ID for free...

Tremulous is supposed to be a new open source game as GPL, but it's crippled as well:
Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

For Tremulous (standalone, as opposed to the old Quake 3 mod), grab the ebuild from the bug.
