Thanks for the advice, but I already did "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -u x11, and that worked.

xorg / pswrap compile error [SOLVED}

I am unable to get xorg-x11 compiled on my desktop. emerge x11 consistently fails in the /var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1/work/xc/config/pswrap directory. I cd'd to that directory and typed make, and I got the following output:
rm -f pswrap
i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -o pswrap -02 -mcpu=i686 -pipe ...

What happens when you do this?
# cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
# mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc

Why can't you get online? Do you not have internet access in the same building as your gentoo machine? Are you having problems configuring a winmodem for dialup? Does the ...

Okay, so now everything is up and running. Apparently Firefox won't start when you don't have permission to open the userChrome.css file in your profile. Thanks again, guys.

I don't know about the X11 vs Xfree thing, but I can probably help you out with your Fluxbox quandary. What are you attempting that your alpha blending isn't working?

Try this: right-click on the desktop, go to fluxbox menu/Configure/Toolbar/Alpha. It'll probably say 255 next to the word Alpha ...

Thanks for the help. It turns out that my original problem with gaim was that I was using the wrong password when I attempted to log in. I re-emerged x11-xorg, and now I'm in a functional X environment as user.

Firefox still isn't working, though--I'm stuck using Links. I figured the problem had ...

From what I recall from when I did my install two months ago, the ipw2100 and ipw2200 drivers were not included on the 2004.3 livecd. When I installed Gentoo to my laptop, I had to plug directly in to the router, and I downloaded the drivers later.

You obviously have net access through some other ...

problems with startx as user

When I first set up my system, I configured everything as root, and now I'm getting X configured to run as my regular login. All the eye-candy applications worked fine, but none of my internet applications could access the net. For instance, typing "firefox" at the command line would bring up a ...

fluxbox/feh problem

When I run fluxbox as root, everything is beautiful and I love it. But when I try to do the right thing and startx as a regular user, I run into a problem. Feh and root-tail are unable to make any alterations to the jet-black background. Running fbsetbg /directory/file.png yields a "hey, try the ...

zieloo's tip did the trick. I had tried putting that line in a ".Xresources" file, but I guess that only works on Xfree86. Thanks!

xorg, fluxbox, and huge fonts

I recently decided to switch to Fluxbox from Gnome, and everything's going great except for one thing--my system fonts are friggin huge! The fonts that can be specified in a style file are scaled down to where I want them, but there are other fonts whose size I can't seem to change. The text in ...

Thanks to Klav's snapshot I was able to get 1680x1050 running. Oddly, though, if I try to load right into Gnome I get some "PCI bus device not found" error message. If I start X using Fluxbox the 1680x1050 comes right up, and then I can start Gnome from within Fluxbox in 1680x1050 without any errors ...

The page you linked to said that I needed to type
lappy root # emerge -u gentoo-dev-sources
to update my sources. That didn't work--I'm still stuck on 2.6.10 and I need 2.6.11 to get my laptop screen to work right.

So I tried lappy root # emerge -pv gentoo-dev-sources/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.11-r2 ...

same problem here

With me it's only the left and right arrow keys that don't work when I first start up gnome--enter and the up and down arrows work fine. I've noticed that when I go to keyboard preferences to fix the problem, I don't have to actually select a different keyboard--I can merely open up the Keyboard m ...
