Report violations, duplicates, misplaced posts, etc.

This will allow an easy method of contacting all moderators at one time.
  • Users:
    • If you spot what you believe to be a duplicate post, please post a link to it here. In addition, include a link to what is being duplicated.
    • If you find a post you think belongs in a different forum, let us know.
    • Avoid multiple reports of spam:
      • If a user's posts are all spam, report the user, not the posts.
      • Review this thread after submitting a report. Please delete your report if someone beat you to the punch.
    • Any other post that you think requires moderation (violations of [topic=525]Guidelines[/topic], broken BBcode, etc.).
  • Moderators:
    • Please delete posts after you've addressed them.
Thanks in advance.

User: ak.plus.gold
Topic: Secure programming language discussion
Post: [post]8847896[/post]
Reason: Somewhat suspicious. No mention of Gentoo, no nothing, straight into their "project" with very generic questions, no details whatsoever. Keep an eye.

I agree, under watching. Thanks for the report -- fedeliallalinea

Maybe my suspicion is not justified. There are responses from the user that seem to be genuine. --logrusx

Well, halcon, your own sig is mocking programmers, what do we do about it?
Seriously though, let's not turn into another redit. Sigs are not a part of discussion, ignore and go about your day.

[Moderator note: The moderation team takes care of such matters. -- pietinger]

Edit: Sure. We have a proverb in Poland which roughly translates as: water carves the rocks; lacking in in force, it drips with persistence.
Recently I noticed a bunch of reports seemingly looking for an excuse to get offended. Meanwhile, one reddit is enough, and it already exists.

Post: [post]8864193[/post]
Reason: It seems this account was created just to add some fuel to a topic that could easily turn to troll/flaming war. The youtube link goes to a video of someone that - as I've read a bit everywhere - is prone to controversy. My point is : moderators, please add extra surveillance to the topic.

Thank you for the report. We will keep an eye on it. --Banana

User: ak.plus.gold
Topic: Need suggestions for software development
Reason: They made a vague topic about some "encryption software" they are making and they said they are loosing interest in this, unless funding is supplied. Looks like spam.

It looks to be poorly thought out so far and I'm watching -- NeddySeagoon
[Note: around 2025-07-26, I received a direct message from ak.plus.gold that did not pertain to this report, but seemed like a legitimate inquiry from a real user. -Hu]

Reason: it looks as if they lost track of their usual blog subforum. Use of weird personal thread title tag indicates they really wanted to post this in Other Things Gentoo, which is known to be used as their blogging place.

Reason: This is the same thing as happened around 8875394. I could comment on it but I figure I'd leave it to moderation.

Hu already replied to this thread later on and made it unmistakably clear that Perfect Gentleman's recommendation is bad: "This is discouraged generally, and is especially discouraged if users are not warned of the danger of doing this." I assume that Perfect Gentleman will take this into account in his recommendations in the future. A third dangerous recommendation would certainly not be tolerated by the moderators. -- pietinger

Actually, I was faster than sam_, by about 90 minutes. ;) To the serious point, around the time that I posted my challenge in that thread, I also lightly modified PG's post to inhibit copy&paste execution of the command as written. (Look for the zwsp.) The next time this happens, I will at the very least be blanking the entire proffered command.
