i'm not sure what you mean... are you talking about how much memory a single process can use? i personally have used upwards of 3-4 gigs of memory (physical/swap combo) with no problems at all for one process. with no special settings

you should check the permissons on the directory where you are mounting your usb hard drive. you must make sure that it is readable by your users group or world.

nope. it's not working. I made a mistake. the chmod g+s command does nothing as far as making all the directories/files writeable.

1. Can you post the permissons on the directory that you are mounting?

2. All the sticky bit does is ensure that all the files that are placed in the folder have the ...

Well, i think i have it.....

i had to edit /etc/services and add rsh. i found an entry that was similar to rsh and copied it. then had to set disable=yes to disable=no in the rsh config file in /etc/xinet.d/. I also had to recompile my kernel to emulate scsi with my burner. For some reason only ...

well, it seems i have to setup rsh for this to work. For whatever reason rsh, rexec, nor rlogin are inserted into my /etc/services file. That means when I try to connect I'm denied since the rsh server is never executed. Anyone know what port etc. it should run on??

EDIT: Here are some of the ...

how do you do this? I am not sure which command I can use.. chmod?

From man chmod:

The letters `rwxXstugo' select the new permissions for the affected users: read (r), write (w),
execute (or access for directories) (x), execute only if the file is a directory or already has

You might also want to add sticky to the group of the parent directory so that any file created will be read/write to the group.

Network CD/DVD Burner

I've heard that it's possible to share my DVD burner across the network so my other computers can use it, but I haven't been able to find any info on it anywhere. Anyone know of a place where I could find some info about this??

Well everyone, one thing I know for sure is that when I moved from nvidia to nv in my xorg.conf file my pc has been rock solid for over a month now.

What does this suggest? A problem with the nvidia driver that's what.

Am I 100% sure? No :?

Has anyone had xorg lockup with nv ?

There are just ...

It should show that way if it is a laptop. If you new install now shows the same mhz all the time then you should probably go back and recompile powernow support in your kernel so you dont set something on fire :)

laptops are capable of lowering the mhz when the processor isnt in use so they dont ...

There are also the single opteron processors. What are the differences between those and the Fx? Some instruction set differences? There are just so many choices out there as far as the 64 bit chips go, it's so hard to choose!

I think I have to disagree with that. The 4000+ has a meg of cache compared to the 512k of the most of the other Athlon64 chips. That in itself can be a huge performance booster. Is it worth the extra cost? I guess that is another question...

What kind of chipset do you have? I have an ASUS board that has an awful ALI chipset that disables AGP for Nvidia cards! I had to use a different motherboard just to get AGP enabled for my 5700 Ultra card.

Try adding a resolution option to your input device section.

Code: Select all

Option Resolution "1000"
I usually end up setting mine to around 1000 to speed the mouse up however you can play with the numbers until you find something that is acceptable.

processor specs confusion

i've been looking into upgrading to an amd 64 lately, but I'm really confused as to the differences in some of the processors. Take the 4000+ and the FX-53 for instance. They have the exact same speed, cache, Sledgehammer core, core voltage, etc. Am I just losing my mind or are these now the same ...

You should try to decrease your "optimization" for things that dont need it. all -O3 is going to do when running mozilla is make the binary larger, ie. longer to load. You should try changing your optimization to -O2 or even -Os and recompiling mozilla and see if that helps.

I use to have a motherboard that no matter how careful I was when I put in new memory it would knock the video card out of the agp slot. Each time I mess with the ram I would then have to go back and reseat the video card too. Could something similar be happening to you?
