Dual PIII-800 - really slow

hi everybody

since a few days I own a SMP-System (Dual PIII-800). At last weekend I installed Gentoo on this system. To get full advantage of the two CPU's I added SMP-Support in the Kernel and everything works fine.
The problem now, which is the reason I created this thread is, that my Gentoo seems to be a little slow. For example if I start Mozilla unter Gnome it takes about 10-20 seconds util Mozilla is opened. Even the gnome-Terminal takes abaout 10 seconds to open.
I don't know what's the reason for this huge load-time. I can't see that there is a heavy harddisk-activity or the CPU-load is very high. It seems the system is having a little sleeping-break.
I know that there are some more overhead-activity on a SMP-System, but aren't there some twaeking options to get it tille faster an must it be so slow?
If I remove SMP-Support, will ony one CPU be used?

The easy one first. If you remove SMP support, then only one CPU will be used.

Since things take so long to start, I suspect that yo have not got your kerenl set up quite right. you are probably missing DMA support for your hard drive(s).

first, thanks for your answer.
The system has a SCSI-Raid Controller, running Raid0 on 2 IBM harddisks, so hdparm don't work. But you are right, something in my Kernel isn't set up quite right.

Did you build in support for all the little things SMP uses? I know there are kernel options for the Real Time Clock, MTRR, and a few other things that go along with SMP. If you didn't build support in for these you may want to do that.

sorry, but so far I didn't sovle the Problem. I even think it's getting slower:(.
If a programm is still running the speed is ok. Only the time until a programm starts is very high. Even the gnome-Terminal, which isn't really big takes about 10 seconds. That's annoyingly.
I read a few articles und tested some Kernel-configurations but I didn't hear about the optimize-Options I need to set. JjcampNR, could you please tell me which little things I should enable in the Kernel? And where is the "Enhanced Real Time Clock" option, which is mentioned in the
SMP-Help?

Give me a day or two and I'll have the locations and options for you, I just moved and have yet to setup my Gentoo machines. I'll try and get to that tomorrow and get back to you tomorrow night.

Also, what version of ReiserFS are you using? I know there are a lot of people having problems with version 4 running slowly.

Perhaps it's a linker problem.
Try prelinking.

Your CFLAGS would be interesting.

By the way you should make synthetic benchmark like nbench or something like this.
Just to test, whether your PC is really slow or is just loading applications slow.

You should try to decrease your "optimization" for things that dont need it. all -O3 is going to do when running mozilla is make the binary larger, ie. longer to load. You should try changing your optimization to -O2 or even -Os and recompiling mozilla and see if that helps.

on a smp system, -O2 is more recommended if not even -Os, that is because of the size of binaries in question which if compiled with -O3 are quite large and so take quite a few more cicles to be transferred from one cpu's cache to another's

smp pretty much works straight out the box with almost no overhead, that doesnt mean all progs will use both processors but you can certainly have multiple threads and bind processes to specific cpus etc, i would say if it is a kernel issue to check the scsi setup

also emerge pciutills and run lspci to check your hardware is all compiled into the kernel, you could even boot from the live cd chroot and startx to see if it really is a kernel issue
