Strange QT behavior - missing letters

The only qt app I use is picard, for tagging my music. I fired it up today and noticed that things weren't looking so good. Refer to the attached screenshot for an idea of what I'm up against. I use GNOME, so dealing with qt apps and fonts is beyond me.

I have a thinkpad z61m, and the volume control keys work in hardware, to the best of my knowledge. I expect there may be a clever way to monitor the level via /proc/acpi/ibm/volume and set the Master/PCM level accordingly. That might just half the resolution of your volume control though, since each ...

gnome panel freezes (new to 2.18)

After a while, my GNOME panel (gnome 2.18.0) will freeze and no longer updates graphically. The notification area icons still respond to mouse clicks and update normally (pidgin, power manager, etc) but the clock, window list, foot menu and volume control don't. `killall gnome-panel` works, and it ...

After switching to the onboard VIA audio chipset, the problem is gone. The original soundcard was a SB Live! Value, using the emu10k1 driver. Now using the snd-via82xx driver, everything is fine. WEIRD!

Pulseaudio errors publishing zeroconf service through avahi

I'm using pulseaudio-0.9.6 and avahi-0.6.18. When I start pulseaudio (a network audio server) on my ~x86 laptop, everything is fine and it publishes a set of audio sinks, sources and a monitor interface.

When I start pulseaudio on my ~amd64 desktop (same versions of avahi/PA), I get the following ...

Update

I was unaware that the sunrise overlay had ebuilds for mac80211 and iwlwifi, so I tried them out. The ebuilds conflicted with my already-patched kernel, so I nuked it and re-emerged suspend2-sources. I'm not typing this message to you on iwlwifi-0.0.18 courtesy of the sunrise overlay. Nice ...

I may give iwlwifi a try later on, but I ran into nothing but trouble when I tried it out. It would randomly hardlock, the connection was flaky, and the LED didn't work so I never knew when it was on or off.

Chastise me if I'm simply being ignorant, but I'm running into the following problem:

Calculating dependencies -
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "net-wireless/mac80211".

Your WEP key should not have quotes. wpa_supplicant tries to parse the " as an alphanumeric character and fails.

I've been having limited success with these kernel options "noirqdebug pci=pirqmask use_acpi_timer_override iommu=off noapic". It seems like a huge string of stuff, and I got them from various message boards, so I haven't figured out what they do yet.

I would just boot with "noapic" and be done ...

madwifi-ng repeatedly reconnects to AP

This is a fairly recent problem I've been having. My wireless interface (ath0) running with latest drivers (madwifi-ng-0.9.3-r3) will sometimes disconnect from my AP, connect, then start a connect/disconnect cycle for a few minutes until stabilizing. Here's some output from syslog-ng:

I have a similar system, a Compaq Presario V6310US. It has the nVidia MCP51 chipset with an amd64 x-2 TL-50. I get the random lockups and I've been trying to fix it for a day or two. I've updated to the new F.28 BIOS from the HP website and I will report back soon on my findings. It's locking up at ...

Compaq V6310 laptop / AMD64 Turion TL-50 cpufreq scaling

I have a new laptop with an amd64 turion TL-50 dual-core processor that I'm setting up with Gentoo. I noticed that the fan keeps ramping up and down during idle, so I looked at the CPU frequency. Even with the ondemand scheduler at idle (load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00) it spends the majority of its ...

Gnome Panel: Notification Area Icons Disappearing

In particular, the "new mail" icon that Sylpheed displays in the panel notification area keeps disappearing after I leave the computer idle for a while. I suspect it may happen upon activation of gnome-screensaver, but I don't have the patience to test it extensively. The icons re-appear once I ...

I tested vobcopy with a DVD I had burned beforehand with lxdvdrip. It does not exhibit the same locking behavior. I suspect something fishy is going on with libdvdread.

Thank you for your response. I will test out 2.6.18 and 2.6.17 to see if it's a release-level change. DMA is definitely enabled. Ripping an audio CD does not exhibit the same softlocking behavior. I will also try a standard data disc.

DVD ripping locks machine sporadically

I'm using lxdvdrip to make DVD9->5 copies, but my system quickly becomes unresponsive during the DVD reading phase of the process. I have a Pioneer DVR-109 DVD-RW which has performed flawlessly until now. For an idea of what happens, I hear the DVD spin up in the drive, then I see some hard drive ...
