Great comparison of ports and portage! Now how do I get XMMS on FreeBSD to stop skipping when I do a whole bunch of things at once? The Con Kolivas patches do this for me on Linux, what settings am I missing on FreeBSD?

I've heard all of the same tired old arguments that the BSD die hards spout. I use the BSD's and Linux and like them all but IMO FreeBSD cannot compete on the desktop with Linux. Linux has mature features that the BSD's lack. The most common pro for BSD I've heard is that it's an OS and not "just a ...

I don't expect C and C++ to be killed by C# anytime soon or ever. Imagine how much embedded code already exists and will grow exponentially when, eventually, even the kitchen sink is microcontrolled and networked. C and C++ are excellent languages, no doubt C#/.NET will dominate Windows development ...

Are you asking how to crack your schools firewall? If UNIT is incompetent with Linux then you're probably out of luck and will just have to adapt. I would do some investigating into UNIT's contract with your school to determine it's terms, duration and who at the school deals directly with UNIT ...

Xnews under wine

I recently setup Xnews under wine and thought others may be interested since it's working great for everything except posting binaries. Here is a screenshot in case you've never seen it before. Xnews can be downloaded from here . I am using version 6.02.16 but 5.04.25 works with this config.

Two things to note though:
- the xfs patch is now in 1.3-pre branch, and I think it was a stable 1.2 at the time of 2.4.20-ckX. Maybe this "pre" have still some issues
- for stability, it is better do disable Preempt when using XFS. Have you tried that?

I'm thinking it's the XFS patch myself ...

I've been having some problems with these patches on 2.4.21 (ck1 and 3) using XFS. I was getting occasional lockups and after rebooting root wouldn't mount until I recompiled the kernel. 2.4.20 ck7 works great though and this is what I'm still using. Anyone else having problems with XFS and these ...

I forgot about this thread and just got my home Internet connection back up (I moved). I had limited success getting all this working on NetBSD; I only got portage functional. Re: Dont open ports

btw
why would you use openbsd.
linux/gnu can be made more secure
with the fact that it is more flexible
than any other *nix flavor
This seems rather naive considering the amount of code auditing the OpenBSD developers perform.

Someone suggested to recompile your kernel without module support ...

Instead of anything specific I can recommend some general things. If you want to learn about firewalls get some good books and learn all the theory. Judging by the damage done I think it's fair to say this wasn't a very sophisticated hacker. Interesting. How high did Bind 8.x max out at?
