openbox vs fluxbox

between open and flux, any advantages or disadvantages for the two?

Stable, flux has more nice features in it.

I'm not sure if this is a flux option now or not, but I'm rather fond of the fact that I can hide the toolbar in openbox.

Fluxbox and pekwm both have the most advanced inplementation of tabs in any window manager. Openbox does not have tabs as of now, but I have heard of plans to include tabs in openbox as well as waiemea. Fluxbox does have antialiasing now. I use flux mainly because of the tabs. I have heard arguements about how tabs should be within individuals apps (ie, mozilla) and not the WM, but I find the tabs in flux to be indespensible. I don't like how pekwm does tabs either. Hope that helps.

Yes, you can hide the toolbar in fluxbox, just right click on the toolbar and select Auto hide.

Last time I checked, Fluxbox didn't have border-attaching (you know, windows sticking to the screen border and stuff). Openbox does have that.

Fluxbox has the remember patch IIRC Openbox has no similar feature or patch.

i've been using flux myself so far, but i still didn't get about the famous "tab" feature of flux.
what kind of advantage of it are people talking about ?

I'm not sure if it is what you want, but in ~/.fluxbox/init you can set the space form where windows get 'clicked' to the border. There is also an option in that file to completely hide the toolbar. It won't even come up if you had your mouse over it's (former) position.

well..one thing i like about flux is that it's pretty easy to set what's in the menu list, what should run when login, etc.

btw, what's the equivalence of ~/.keys (fluxbox) in openbox?
and how do we add items to the menu ?

The menu's are set up exactly the same. Fluxbox/Blackbox/Openbox use the same menu and style format. If you want, u can even use ur menu u use for fluxbox in openbox.
Openbox uses another program called "epist" for keys, and the config for it is in ~/.openbox/epistrc. Just add epist to ur .xinitrc/.xsession so it'll start when u startx. Also, epist comes with openbox, when you "emerge openbox". So you don't have to hunt for it in the portage tree like i first did.

gotta love the tabs. Fluxbox is better than openbox feature wise. Openbox has better xft support.

~/.openbox/epistrc controls keybindings, though the syntax is different. The menu is ~/.openbox/menu IIRC, though I'm not positive.

As for openbox vs fluxbox.... they're basically the same thing. Their feature sets are identical other than flux's tabs. (which I don't happen to use)

For the record, I use openbox, not because it's a "better" wm but because flux failed to compile last time I installed gentoo and it was easier to convert my key binding file than make flux compile. My second box still uses flux though.
