We are mainly an hpux shop in work, but linux is slowly making in roads. Most of our cpu intensive apps will run on linux and usually do much faster than on hpux (which they currently run on). Someone asked me today why apps on linux seem to run faster (in a general sense) than on hpux and I didn't know the technically correct answer for them so I thought I'd post it here to see what kind of response's others had.
Thanks in advance...
Hard to say.
Is it actually running on the same box?
We have numrous HP boxes running various version of HP-UX. It is impossible to compare Linux to HP-UX unless you actually use the same hardware. Most HP boxes are running on processors in 400-800Mhz range and on a non-intel porcessor so comparing it to Linux on a fast intel processor is not really comparing apples to apples.
