I don't use sub-pixel hinting andl my system was not slow BUT 30% and more overhead, just for some eyecandy, is far too much. At the end of the day i have work to do with my laptop ;-). I dropped it and i won't bring it back until these problems are solved.

Hi,

i have tried it on my Dell M90 and have seen up to 25 % Usage by beryl and an additional 12 to 15 % cpu usage by X.
I decided that this eyecandy stuff is not worth this kind of overhead 8O

Hi,

this is definitely a problem :

hdc: LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165H6S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

this shows that you use the ide drivers, this will NOT work.

Do one of the following:

* Disable the IDE system. OR
* Build the IDE driver as built-in (this is often the default) and add the hdc=noprobe ...

Hi,

i assume your Acer uses a Sata Controller but to be sure please post ouput of lspci .
Bottomline the drive performance is very bad, not even fast enough for DVD playing. It feels like an IDE drive that is not using DMA.
The laptop uses a SATA to PATA bridge for the DVD drive and you will not ...

Hi just wondering if you still have this problem ?

I am running an M90 with gentoo, i assume it's probably the missing sata support in your kernel but i am not 100% sure.

Code: Select all

CONFIG_SCSI_SATA=y
If this is not the case can you post output of

Here are the parts from my kernel config. I did not enable AHCI support.

< > SCSI OnStream SC-x0 tape support
<*> SCSI CDROM support
[*] Enable vendor-specific extensions (for SCSI CDROM)
<*> SCSI generic support

1) Remove support for for the IDE bus. Deselect the following option

Device Drivers -->

Most likely you will also see a new kernel version, a new version of gcc, glibc, portage, baselayout udev etc.... It is probaly a good idea to
look at all the upgrade guides in the gentoo documentation. If you decide to install xorg 7 then look for the appropiate threads in this forum.
