hello

I have problems with burn dvd from image
its about 0.1x dvd
I used to use k3b k3b-0.12.17
but after I tried to burn from command line with X server disabled and submount disabled to make plain test and ....
results the same :(

head from growisofs
is

Code: Select all

About to execute 'builtin_dd if=/home/user/tmp/k3b_image.iso of=/dev/hdb obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/hdb: restarting DVD+RW format...

hardware Acer Aspire 1652WLMi

BUT when i try to burn not image, but file structure - speed is a about 1x( bit higher but still impossible to understand how writer could burn with such slow speed in Gentoo) while at windows with nero I could easily burn at 4x and images and files

PS i tried to use cdrecord-prodvd and\or ide-scsi mod for DVD and result a the same or plus or minus 0.1x

Hi,

i assume your Acer uses a Sata Controller but to be sure please post ouput of

Code: Select all

lspci
.
Bottomline the drive performance is very bad, not even fast enough for DVD playing. It feels like an IDE drive that is not using DMA.
The laptop uses a SATA to PATA bridge for the DVD drive and you will not be able to set DMA on the device as is. There are several post about this problem If your laptop uses a sata controller then you might have a look at the links below :

dvd burning extremly slow when burn .iso

Not sure if this will help, but I was seeing a very similar message.

My disks were burning at .3x (point 3x ). It would take at least an hour to burn a dvd and performance was unreliable. The buffer would fill and empty. It looked like a typical disk problem, or setup issue.

I tried the normal hdparm stuff, to no avail. Finally I checked the logs and saw both the dmesg command and a
cat tail /var/log/messages showed several entries of "cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!"

Turns out in /etc/fstab I had a line for both my cdrom, and my dvd, but only one device. I'm guessing it was trying to automount the cdrom while the dvd was burning. Really strange. As soon as I commented out my cdrom, the problem seem to go away for me. no reboot, no nothing.

originally:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto auto 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/dvd iso9660 auto 0 0

changed to:
# /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto auto 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/dvd iso9660 auto 0 0

As I type, a 4x dvd is burning at 4x and my buffer has not dropped below 88.5%.

God Bless !

Merry Christmas

Is it a DVD-RW disc?

I was recently shredding (using shred command) one DVD+RW disk and I found that the anticipatory IO scheduler with default parameters made it very slow (less than 128KB/s). This may not apply to you since you are using programs which may not use the dvd drive as standard block device (since only DVD+RW and DVD-RAM support random write).

The easiest solution was to switch the device to deadline scheduler (changing some parameters of anticipatory scheduler should work too):

Code: Select all

echo deadline > /sys/block/hdb/queue/scheduler
(works only until reboot)

To check which I/O schedulers are available (they have to compiled into kernel or loaded as modules) and which one is active, use

Code: Select all

cat /sys/block/hdb/queue/scheduler

Thanks, but I'm all fixed. I can now burn at 4x and above using both DVD +R and DVD-RW's

Having both lines in my /etc/fstab file was my problem.

begin with running k3b as root...

programs using hardware often suffers from compatibility loss when ran by normal users....

I am having a similar problem. growisofs has been very slow recently. For example:

3542024192/4503199744 (78.7%) @4.1x, remaining 3:00 RBU 0.4% UBU 88.9%

It is like this all the way down. I did dmesg | tail and noticed:

patrick@Kawaii64 ~ $ dmesg | tail
hdb: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
ATAPI device hdb:
Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium -- (asc=0x64, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Read 10" packet command was:
"28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device hdb, logical block 0
cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

So then I stopped the hald service and it is now burning normally. I do NOT have my cdrom set to auto mount in my fstab, so why is it trying to constantly read the disc?

I am not really sure what hald is, but I remember having to start it for some X applications to be happy so I have it set to load with the rc on boot. How do I work around this?
