Hey deej,

I like techreport.com a lot for product reviews, and they have build guides for a variety of budgets.

for 1000 (USD) http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/13218/4
for 1500 (USD) http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/13218/6

Personally, I would go for a modified 1500-build, but drop the ...

fbrun segfaults after upgrade to GCC 4.X

Topic pretty much says it all. Havn't found any others on the net with this issue.

Fbrun is a little app provided by fluxbox

Different tools. C++ is good at some things, python is good at other things. And tools like portage and yum aren't exactly CPU intensive tasks, they tend to be much more disk-intensive.

And as the above posters mentioned, gentoo is not portage, both gentoo and fedora are very similar in language ...

This does not explain why you get no sound though. Could the soundcard be defective?

Nope, I check by rebooting into Windows, it works fine on both outputs (front and back)

And sorry, I should have mentioned this clue earlier, at boot, when ALSA starts, right after it says
Resting Mixer ...

No such luck... I muted/unmuted the odd channels at the right, including SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack.

Also, it doesn't explain why PCM doesn't want to unmute, which is what is controlling the front speakers...

Alsa problem, PCM not unmuting

I've had this problem for a while..

2.6.11 kernel, alsa built in, with a sbLive, with alsa-lib, etc. at 1.0.8

Problem:
I have a 4 speaker system, and only the *rear* two are working.

Say I start from a clean asound.state:

zeta-root:/etc/init.d/alsasound stop
* Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ...

wow, I think that is a great idea. Perhaps a better way is that it would ask what packages you want installed (PostgreSQL instead of MySQL, for ex) but I like the idea of the simple system-wide configuration.

Anyway, I'd help test it once it gets started.

AMD Cool n' Quiet ondemand causing firefox to crash?

Whenever I set the scheduling govenor to ondemand instead of performance, firefox will randomly crash. It goes back to normal when set to performance.

Any ideas?

Well, it *does *do that, but a little more complicated.
When mpd is running, and the files are in the mpd db, you
can just do

mpc add [songname]

and then, when it is playing, type

mpc

and it will give id3tag info.
You can even change the format, as a field of mpc (check man mpc)
i.e ...

this is what you do:

umount /mnt/home (unmount it)
then edit /etc/fstab

put in

Code: Select all

/dev/hdd /home ext2 noatime 0 0
Remove the /dev/hda3 entry
but the way, did you want to journal it, so it was ext3? You should..

Anyway, then you can just do mount /mnt/home

Hey, recent problem, I don't know if it is me... I'm using .18, and I noticed that my i2c sensors aren't updating.

When torsmo is first launched, they get the correct values (i2c temp 1), but then they stay that way, stuck.
Everything else updates normally.

Yeah I had sensor reading problems too ...

Tv-out on PVR-350

HI, I'v been struggling for hours to get the video to my TV.
I compiled ivtv from source today.
Getting video *in*, i.e. cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg works fine.
But cat test.mpg > /dev/video16, just hangs, as it should, but there is no effect on the TV.
Would anyone know where to look?

I *havn't ...
