Gnome stopped working ... Beryl not displaying [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by Kisil » Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:54 am

I "emerge --sync"-ed and updated a couple of fairly trivial-looking X libraries (sorry, I don't remember what they are.) Now Gnome no longer works - it starts up, but menus and applications don't show up on screen. Clicking a shortcut on the gnome-panel shows the application in the taskbar, and Beryl pops up a preview window, but the actual window doesn't get rendered.

My first hunch is that it's beryl-related somehow, but I can't figure out how to disable beryl from starting up without using the GUI session manager (short of emerge -C, since I don't want to recompile it later).

Any advice or thoughts on what else could be wrong?

I recompiled most of gnome and X and it didn't make any difference. Fluxbox also still works fine.

[edit]changed title to reflect post below; the problem is Beryl[/edit]

Did you do revdep-rebuild? about stopping beryl, remove it from your config (don't remember the address, but the gentoo xeffects site I think it had it).

I'll run revdep-rebuild and post again if that helps.

I'll also google for the config file, though I just remembered, I started a "failsafe session," where it supposedly doesn't run your startups, and that was broken too.. so that would indicate the problem's not beryl.

revdep-rebuild found some things. Beryl crashed loading Gnome once, so I was able to get into gnome and remove it from startup; now gnome works. Beryl was the problem.

Now the next question, why would beryl just not display my windows? Is this a bug or a configuration problem?

The latest update of libXProto or one of those things breaks compositing. Just reemerge xorg-server and you should be fine.

That's what really bugs me about Gentoo. You never know after an update what might now be broken. At least the problem this time was obvious, the last time it happened it took me a couple of days to figure out that mythbackend was no longer running, and my recordings weren't happening. Then again, there might still be something broken in something else that I haven't noticed yet.

Having the same problem here using KDE. X crashes on start up and starting Beryl manually causes windows to disappear. Turns out I updated libXcomposite and a bunch of other libraries. I'll see if recompiling xorg does the trick.

Recompiling xorg-server worked for me. Thanks for all the help.

Now if I could only get Heliodor to work..

Have you tried everything suggested above? "revdep-rebuild" at least fixed some things for me; I'm not sure whether they were related, but best to be safe..

Spent over five hours straight debugging this. Re-emerging xorg-server did the job. Thx again, Gentoo!
