So this really is a broader problem then I thought.

Any long compilation fails with "internal compiler error". Gcc fails consistently but in random locations.

Ran a memtest but no errors were found.
Took down optimization level, but that didn't help.

Any ideas?

After a long time away from Gentoo I decided to install it on my amd64 system.
All is swell until I try
emerge -v grub

The emerge fails.

I solved the problem!

My only excuse is that it's been 3 years since the last time I have used Gentoo. The problem was right in the compilation output.
