Problem building v86d v0.1.9 [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by lorenct » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:55 pm

Upon emerging v86d-0.1.9, during the compilation I am receiving the following error:
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/v86d-0.1.9/work/v86d-0.1.9/libs/lrmi-0.10'
klcc -Llibs/lrmi-0.10 -static -Wl,--section-start,vm86_ret=0x9000 v86_lrmi.o v86_common.o v86.o -llrmi -o v86d
/usr/bin/ld: v86d: Not enough room for program headers (allocated 4, need 5)
/usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Bad value
make: *** [v86d] Error 1
I have looked through the forums and goolged solutions to no avail, so I am hoping someone else has encountered this problem and knows a solution...

Thank you.

v86d, more information...

  • Quote

Post by lorenct » Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:30 pm

More information...

Tried upgrading the kernel on my system from gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r9 to gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r3 and followed all the steps in spock's instructions at:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/uvesafb/

Including completing Step 4 to "emerge klibc" against the new kernel tree, but I still have the same problem when trying to upgrade from v86d v0.1.3-r1 to v0.1.9.

Error during the build process as follows:

I ended up using the "x86emu" USE flag:
# emerge -pv v86d

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/v86d-0.1.9 USE="x86emu -debug" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

I solved the problem!

My only excuse is that it's been 3 years since the last time I have used Gentoo. The problem was right in the compilation output.

Code: Select all

make -w -C libs/x86emu
make[1]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/v86d-0.1.9/work/v86d-0.1.9/libs/x86emu'
klcc -c -O2 -march=k8-sse3 -pipe -combine -I/usr/src/linux/include -Ilibs/x86emu -I. -I../../include -I../../include/x86emu -o decode.o decode.c
klcc -c -O2 -march=k8-sse3 -pipe -combine -I/usr/src/linux/include -Ilibs/x86emu -I. -I../../include -I../../include/x86emu -o fpu.o fpu.c
klcc -O2 -march=k8-sse3 -pipe -combine -I/usr/src/linux/include -Ilibs/x86emu -c -o v86_x86emu.o v86_x86emu.c
/usr/bin/klcc: unknown option: -combine
/usr/bin/klcc: unknown option: -combine
A quick look at my emerge --info showed me that I am using the "-combine" compilation flag. Apparently klcc which

Code: Select all

klcc is a wrapper around gcc(1) and ld(1) which compiles and links a program against the klibc tiny C library. It supports *most* gcc options.
Most - not -combine

:-)

Got rid of that option and all went swell.
To err is human. To really fuck up, use a computer.
