$ xrdb -merge .Xdefaults perhaps?

I think that just does a load but merges it with current settings... anyway, I have to do that everytime I reboot, too (in place of a load, basically).

I'm using Xorg 6.8.2 and Gnome 2.8

I didn't think my DE would have any affect on me running xterm, as I ...

Small problem with Xterm / .Xdefaults file

It seems everytime I reboot I need to run "xrdm -load .Xdefaults" then re-run a new Xterm.

What do I need to do so that xterm reads this file everytime it starts, as I understood it was supposed to?

Thanks in advance.

Nevermind, I realized I should have checked in ~

I nuked .gnome* and the xfce config folders so I could get in X again, and suddenly X loads into 1600x1200 by default (as it should now)

Where do the DE's change the resolution at?

Ok, my xorg.conf isn't playing nice, I set the only and one mode to 1600x1200 and the one and only depth to 24, and everytime I start X it goes into the highest resolution possible (2000somethingx2000something).

So, I was able to change the resolution to 1600x1200 in Gnome and XFCE4, but now when I ...

24 should look great, I think you're having the same problem as me though...

When using the real "nvidia" driver, my depth is set to 24 (in Xorg) but it seems like I'm running on 256, I can't figure out how to get it to work correctly...

Surround with RealTek ALC850 (Stereo works, no surround)

My MSI nForce3 Ultra board uses the RealTek ALC850 (AC97) for sound, it has full 7.1 surround support.

I'm not sure if this is a problem specific to AMD64, but I'm running a full 64-bit installation, so I figured I'd post it here.

Basically, I have full working stereo, but the back and center ...

It seems most of your problems are easily fixed, as danmitchell showed you.

Although I wish I could fix the moving text/images when using Firefox under KDE, too. (doesn't do it under Gnome)

The only real difference is that you can enable the -march=k8 in your CFLAGS, to take advantage of Athlon64-specific optimizations - including SSE2 support - all while remanining in 32-bit mode.

If you want a 32-bit install are you sure you can set the arch to k8? Aren't you supposed to use ...

You make a good point... so if I installed the 32bit libs, I would mostly just compile mplayer in 32bit (for the codecs)... aside from that (and maybe games) I have no plans for OpenOffice or Wine, etc.

And I thought the Netscape plugins didn't work anyways, and I would just be using 64bit ...

Question, if I were to "go 64" and build a native 64 Gentoo machine... and I didn't install the 32-bit emulation libraries (for things like wine)... what all would I be missing?

In other words, does anyone run a pure-64 system, with no 32-bit binaries or wierd library workarounds? No openoffice ...

gtk# is gtk bindings for C#, so in Windows you use typical C# and WindowsForms to make apps, and in Linux you use gtk (through C# and Mono) for GUIs.

No previews in Konqueror (KDE 3.3.x)

I have previews turned on for Images, Text, etc... but I've yet to see a single preview.

I'm trying to view thumbnails of my images, hovering doesn't even pop up the normal privew in the big tooltip... I have icons on really big (used to be thumbnails last time I used KDE).

Kind of a basic problem ...
