Where do the DE's change the resolution at?

Ok, my xorg.conf isn't playing nice, I set the only and one mode to 1600x1200 and the one and only depth to 24, and everytime I start X it goes into the highest resolution possible (2000somethingx2000something).

So, I was able to change the resolution to 1600x1200 in Gnome and XFCE4, but now when I try to go back into a DE which I have changed the resolution, I get a totally borked monitor... like, color stripes, nothing is visible, I have to reboot the system from SSH.

I need to find where Gnome tells X to switch to 1600x1200 and remove it, or I can't ever get back into Gnome... I guess. After I can get back into Gnome/XFCE I really need to figure out how to make X respect my damn 1600x1200... ugh.

Ideas?

Nevermind, I realized I should have checked in ~

I nuked .gnome* and the xfce config folders so I could get in X again, and suddenly X loads into 1600x1200 by default (as it should now)
