KDE emerges funny, and startx won't work. [SOLVED]

I'm following the The KDE Configuration HOWTO, and when I emerged KDE, it started installing things for a few days...then, when I checked on it, it started looping the letter 'y', and the only way to stop it was to use Ctr-C. I used 'emerge kde' again, and it emerged one package and finished. I then used

Code: Select all

echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc
and typed 'startx', which gave me this:

Code: Select all

Have you created /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If not, run X -config (or generate it manually with xorgconfig).

If you want KDE to start automatically at boot:

Edit /etc/rc.conf. Scroll down to the bottom and change the values to what's needed for KDE. Then:

Code: Select all

rc-update add xdm default
/etc/init.d/xdm start
That adds xdm (really kdm after the changes to rc.conf) to the default runlevel, and then starts kdm.

When I type X -config, I get the following:

Code: Select all

Fatal Server Error.
Unrecognized option: -config
A list of X Commands is also above this, one of them was '-configure'. Should I use that one instead? It's description is "Probe for devices, write a xorg.conf". I'm pretty sure it's the one I want, but being as new as I am to this, I don't want to mess everything up.

I found the Gentoo Xorg gude, and it told me to use -configure. I must be getting too paranoid. :P
Everything seems to be working now, my only problem is that depite the fact I have my resoloution set at 800x600, some of the fonts stay very small. Thanks for your help! :)

You can change font sizes in the KDE Control Panel.
