for posterity, the final setup for me to get a stable br0 mac address is to bind it to the physical nic's mac.

hmm.. i just tried rebooting /w the mac_tapN stuff set, and it didn't work (things hung when sshd started up). removing them fixed things, and it appears things get randomly assigned anyway. ultimately, this was trying to get bridging to multiple vms to work, and it seems that the macaddr i set for ...

to be clear, this is what we should do if we want interactive make oldconfig?

1. emerge new kernel
2. cp /usr/src/oldkernel/.config /usr/src/newkernel
3. eselect kernel set [new kernel #]
4. cd /usr/src/linux
5. make oldconfig
6. answer questions
7. genkernel --oldconfig all

i went ahead and made a patch to make the 4.1.1-r6 ebuild force python2, and updated the tracking bug, so hopefully it gets into prod soon:

i had compile errors, too, but then i tried re-compiling again, and it was hit or miss that it would succeed for fail. i'm on amd64 with a phenom ii x4 945 cpu, so i was compiling w/ parallel make (-j5)...

i haven't tested since getting a good compile, but you should try compiling w/ -j1 or ...

so it seems that i stumbled upon a 'quote' command that's very similar to echo, but more retarded than it. i'm running bash-3.2_p39 ...

back before the newfangled hald, hotplug, gnome-volume-manager stuff, i had my /etc/fstab entry for my usb cf card reader mount the media that was v/fat w/ the default permissions of 644 for all files.

now, in the new way of doing things, gnome-volume-manager mounts the v/fat partitions w/ all ...

revdep-rebuild doesn't support ignoring packages, and probably never will :(

hmmm... how hard is it to read in a file specifying a list of binary packages and choose to ignore if a library is a part of that package? heck, the dilemma is the design decision to either to have the list of packages ...

these are burst rates.. not sustained...

the key things for typical drive performance is buffer size, rpm, and seek time... (not necessarily in that order)

what if i want to synchronize /usr/ local /portage (a portage overlay)? i tend to roll my own ebuilds, so i'd like to sync this directory (and *just* this directory) between two machines.

rsync --rsh="ssh -C" -plarvz username@servermachine:/usr/local/portage /usr/local/portage

That'd do it ...

i wrote my own method for doing this... it does all the errors that could possibly arise (and ignores the ones that don't matter, like args > 2).

name this script "rl" and put it in your path:
