'compiz.desktop' failed to register before timeout

hey there,

I'm using gdm as login manager and never had problems until today. when logging in, right after entering the password, gdm hangs and nothing happens. after 5-10 seconds delay the desktop loads. during this hang there is no cpu or disk activity. it just sits there. I have checked .xsession.errors and /var/log/messages and found the following:

WARNING: Application 'compiz.desktop' failed to register before timeout

I believe that this is the reason for the delay. However, I have no clue how to fix it. I'm using:

gdm-2.28.2-r1 (same behaviour with latest stable 2.20.10-r2 in portage)
compiz-0.8.6 (as well as the corresponding versions of the plugins)

anybody experiencing this behaviour?

The problem seems to be quite common, still I couldn't find any solution.
On my work PC the delay is exactly 10s, however on my laptop it's 60 seconds... It's surely a problem with compiz - with metacity there are no delays.

EDIT: still no solution, but I found a workaround:
1. run gconf-editor; go to desktop->gnome->session and remove "windowmanager" from key "required_components_list"
2. open menu System -> Starting programs; add compiz-manager (be sure to have Window Decorations turned on in CCSM)

Another workaround....is to replace in /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop the Exec line like this:

Exec=bash -c 'compiz ccp decoration --sm-client-id $DESKTOP_AUTOSTART_ID'
