Is there a comprehensive explanation of emerge output

Maybe I haven't found it, but I still struggle with the symbols and output. I can usually muddle through, but I would be happy to sit down with a complete, thorough explanation of all the symbols, etc. I only seem to find piecemeal answers and never exactly what I'm looking to understand.

[SOLVED]2 monitors on dp can only get sound from one

I have hd audio drivers for both my nvidia card, and alc1220.

I want HDMI 2, but pavucontrol shows that one as unplugged and unavailable. I want sound from my gs2f7a, but I can't get sound out of it. I'm completely lost when it comes to sound in linux, and is has "just ...

Seems the fix was intermittent. Sometimes kernel panic on trying, I guess to load the ahci driver for 2nd chipset, sometimes it works. I'm trying different kernels to see if there's something newer than 5.15.80 (which works perfectly). If not I can fall back to that. So far, 6.12.23 seems to be ...

I suspect you mean you you are not able to mount the NTFS file system for "Win10 drive" for your newer kernel.

can you share lsblk -f to verify if a device/partition detected by the newer kernel.
and lsmod to confirm no dynamic ntfs module loaded
and the newer kernel .config? to verify if any ntfs ...

[SOLVED] 5.15.80 sees 2nd nvme ssd, 6.12.21 doesn't

2 nvme m2 drives, one with Gentoo, one with Win10. My old kernel, 5.15.80, Sees the Win10 drive, which is where the Win bootloader is in the EFISP. lsblk and blkid both see it. I can mount the ESP and manipulate files there. My newer kernel is not aware of the Win10 drive at all. It doesn't even ...

I had some efibootmgr issues recently, also it didn't lasted for the next login, until I added the -d parameter
Because my root=/= /dev/sda, I always have to use the -d parameter. That wasn't my issue.

Have found a method that works for my bios, anyway:

efibootmgr issues

So, I have managed to populate my /sys/firmware/efi/efivars by flipping my bios' nx bit back on. I can now see the variables both from the min install environment, outside of chroot, and inside. I then
'modprobe efivarfs'
'mount -o rw,remount /sys/firmware/efi/efivars'
and efibootmanager will show ...

problems with /sys/firmware/efi/efivars being empty [SOLVED]

New motherboard: CSM is off in bios. Windows installed and runs in UEFI mode just fine. Gentoo install still exists, with a known-good efi partition and everything. As a matter of fact, Windows is using this partition for its own boot loader. I went to add rEFInd to EFI boot list with efibootmgr ...

When I understood correctly anything more ...

Its very warm here, and I saw a maximum of about 75C. I have yet to do any fine tuning to voltages and limits, etc.

The things we do for Gentoo

After 3 years or so on my venerable 2700x, I finally managed an upgrade Ive looked forward to for some time: A brand new 3900x. Why not a 5900x? It looks as though the gains per dollar arent as sweet with ryzen3 as with the 3900x. Long story short: gcc-10.3 went from 32 min @ -j14, to 19 min @ -j20 ...

Unless you're massively misconfigured, you wont notice much, if any performance improvement. Get a hobby that you enjoy?
Once you get a kernel configured and working, which is kind of basic to Gentoo, you don't really have to do much to maintain it. But, don't stop. Keep sharing. How do you ...

I keep on wanting to start making my custom kernel but I just don't/can't be bothered to make one.

I have all the time in the world currently but I just don't want to?
