  • Quote

Post by rush_ad » Fri Aug 06, 2004 12:36 pm

these are messages i get after initlevel 3 or something like that

Starting syslog-ng....
Loading ALSA drivers.....
Using ALSA OSS emulation
Loading: snd-mixer-oss
Loading: snd-pcm-oss
Loading: snd-seq-oss
Running card-dependent script
Restoring mixer levels
Setting DNS domainname to homenetwork
Starting input hotplugging
Starting pci hotplugging
Starting usb hotplugging
Bringing eth0 up via DHCP
eth0 received address ***.***.**.**........
Mounting network filesystems....
Starting vixie-cron.....
Setting up gdm....
Starting local......

what do these messages tell me? which processes do i need to start at bootup? how do i remove the ones i do not need?

all i need is eth0 and sound to start when i start my computer.

also, it takes about 15-20 seconds to get pass the message reading "Calculating module dependencies"

for more info:
i'm running celeron 600, sound blaster live, 300mb ram
with kernel 2.6.7-gentoo-r11

please help me, it just too annoying to keep looking at screen loading stuff i do not need.

You need to rebuild your kernel.
- disable OSS emulation for ALSA
- drop the PCI hotplug stuff
- in fact, drop all the hotplug stuff except USB - unless you don't use USB either, in which case you can drop it all.

If you find the very informative boot screen annoying, may I suggest you choose a less informative OS, like Windows XP ?

Starting syslog-ng....
The system logger - this is necessary in most systems.
Loading ALSA drivers.....
Using ALSA OSS emulation
Loading: snd-mixer-oss
Loading: snd-pcm-oss
Loading: snd-seq-oss
Running card-dependent script
Restoring mixer levels
ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. That's what your sound drivers rely on.

Like adaptr said, drop oss emulation.
Setting DNS domainname to homenetwork
That's your domain config.
Starting input hotplugging
Starting pci hotplugging
Starting usb hotplugging
Hotplugging of different things. You can drop them all, unless you really really need it.
Bringing eth0 up via DHCP
eth0 received address ***.***.**.**........
ETH0 configuration!
Mounting network filesystems....
If you have no network filesystems, remove netmount from the runlevel.
Starting vixie-cron.....
Vixie-cron - the CRON daemon. Another has-to-be-there thing.
Setting up gdm....
Launching gdm for the GUI login prompt,
Starting local......
No idea! :D It just happens!

That module dependencies step, you can't do much to speed it up, except, probably compiling all your drivers and things into the kernel, rather than as modules. I have very few modules, for example.

If you don't want to look at all that stuff, why don't you look for a bootsplash theme? They're all over this forum... :)

Don't remove OSS emulation like they're suggesting. If you do, most programs written more than a year or two ago will stop giving sound. XMMS will stop playing unless you install and select the ALSA module in XMMS config. Most games won't have sound. Lots of other things will break. OSS emulation doesn't take up much time, and is quite neccessary until people rewrite their programs to use ALSA (which will never happen...)

OK, I neglected to consider that you might be a gamer of sorts - most games newer than two years or so will work anyway, as will anything with an Alsa plugin, like XMMS (have to compile things with USE="alsa", of course). But if you've got older games, they may not work.

To remove kernel options, or to make things hardcoded rather than modules/vice versa, you need to recompile the kernel. Follow the instructions in the gentoo install guide.

To add/remove stuff from the runlevel, run the command:

Code: Select all

# rc-update del <service name>
To find the service name, look in /etc/init.d and see if there's any script in there that matches the one you want to remove. For example, eth0 is called net.eth0, and network filesystems is called netmount.

If the messages bother you, set up bootsplash ( http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49036 ) and boot in silent mode.

This just runs a script (/etc/init.d/local.start) that is a convenient place for you to quickly drop in a couple of commands that you wish to be run at boot. By default the script is probably empty so you could safely stop it from being run at boot but doing so wouldn't make much difference.

Ehm, why should he drop OSS emulation? OSS is still used in a lot of programs and games (vendetta-test to name one), alsa is the new stuff but older programs still use OSS. So don't remove OSS emulation!
nitro-sources, because between stable and experimental there exists only speed

Latest release I made: 2.6.13.2-nitro1
