BEFORE YOU READ THIS
This project has basically been abadoned by me. The newer posts which contain information about a new Linux gaming site I'm trying to start up are here:
http://riblet.plus.com
Hi,
Okay, before I start, I don't want to get shot down in flames for "spamming" here. If I'm out of line by posting this, I apologise.
Basically, I recently made a petition website to get Half Life and Half Life 2 ported to Linux, the project is also working to get the source code to Half Life version 1 made open source. I believe that if we can get enough people signing this thing, then Valve may sit up and take notice of the Linux market.
So please, if you agree with the project's aims (or even just one of the three aims, you can select what you support), then sign the petition and make a difference:
http://cgi.riblet.plus.com
I also welcome any comments from users (preferably constructive ones ).
Regards,
-Ribs.

I think it's worth a shot - and I would like to sign, if only I could connect to your website. |

I agree with both ideas (porting and making it open source)... but, imho, the latter will never ever happen... you should have just asked for a linux port |

LoveChild; I will take it up with the people providing the hosting. Anymore information you could provide will be helpfull (browser, OS, connection type, location, etc.)
At current, I have no idea why it works for everyone else, but not yourself. You may want to try going through one of those anonymous proxy providers that are out there (the legit ones, that is) to see if that helps.

Mozilla 1.3 / 1.4 beta - Gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5, ADSL 1MBit, Denmark
I think the problem might be my dads insane firewall, but we are working on replacing it right now so I'll give it a shot when we are done. |

Just signed! Ribs, this is an excellent idea, lets hope you (we) get our wishes to come true. Surely Valve can't be making much more money from Half-life with Half-Life 2 on its way! What would be really great is to pick up Half-Life 2 when it is released and read on the box:
Minimum OS: Windows 2000/Windows XP/Linux
That would make my day

Signed-- but I doubt it'll happen. Valve has a habit of sticking their head in their asses-- unlike other FPS game makers like id Software or Epic. |

Signed.
You should try and get this on some big news sites, such as Slashdot, linuxgames.com, happypenguin.com and newsforge.com. That would really boost your hopes both of getting a lot of signatures, and getting some result from it. |

Half-life is based on id software's quake 2 graphic engine. Quake 2 isn't opensourced yet right? I don't think half-life can be opensourced without the graphics engine.
I wouldn't be too surprised to se ID opensource quake2 though.

Wow,
Thanks for the response guys. The database dump now locks up Mozilla for a good thirty seconds as it lays out the page
Also a big thank you for posting this onto forums, this is precisely the exposure the site needs.
Re The SlashDot, etc. thing; I don't frequent these sites. Prehaps someone here would be kind enough to post on my behalf?
Lovechild; If you are still haveing problems, sent me a private message via this forum, and I can add you manually. I'll need your name, e-mail, age, any comment you wish to make (optional), If you support Half Life becoming open source (yes or no), if you believe Half Life 2 should be ported to Linux (Yes or no) and if you would pre-order a copy of Half Life 2 for Linux if Valve made a pre-ordering system (again, yes or no).
Regards,
-Ribs. |

You should have a signature from me now with a rather longish comment - I didn't get a confimation message but when I revisit that page it says that I already signed and confirmed. |

LoveChild; What is the beginning part of your e-mail address (bit before the @)? I'll need it to check the database for your entry, and manually confirm you if needed. So far, you are the only one to have problems.
Bandwidth wise, I too was concerned about it. I asked my hoster about that, he said that I get 250mb per day. And given that the actual content of the site is pretty small, I can't see it being too much of a problem. The average user will take around 30-35k of bandwidth. So it can take around 7000 hits per day until I run into trouble. If I get that many hits in one day, and everyone signs the petition, then I'll be able to send it to Valve. Is it likley that Slashdot will actually produce as many hits as that? I've only been there once or twice, so I wouldn't know.
If need be, I can probabily compress the site a bit and double the amount of hits it can take in a day.
Regards,
-Ribs. |

Sorry, I only just saw your question. A counter is currently in the works. Currently, I don't have much time to work on it...

here is my comment:
Quote: | I believe that Linux is "the next best thing".
More and more users around the world are switching to linux, including gamers.
If Half-Life 2 is going to be around as long as Half-Life has been, then I believe Valve could profit from supporting Linux, and therefore all it's users.
It would be the BEST game in the world on the Linux platform. Imagine the publicity! |
