I had something similar after messing around with the '--jobs' option. No emerge would run after that.
When I went to clear out /var/tmp/portage, I discovered a lockfile.
Ran lsof and found an orphaned emerge. Killed it and emerges started running properly again.

Active python should have 'xml' useflag set (and it seems that that useflag should be required by the ebuild too...).

Eix says that both pythons have the xml flag set:

I just bought a Lenovo W530, and I mean to install gentoo on it as a dual boot with the preinstalled Windows 7 Pro.

It has according to the spec a hybrid drive of 500GB capacity.

Under Windows 7(preinstalled), the 500GB one shows up in My Computer and the SSD is use to speed things up I think and ...

Ok it works. Here is the procedure:

Add the x11 overlay.
unmask =media-libs/mesa-9999 and =xf86-video-nouveau-9999
emerge -1 media-libs/mesa xorg-server xf86-video-nouveau
emerge media-libs/libtxc_dxtn


This maybe overkill, but it does work.

So I use the Nouveau drivers for my GeForce GTS 250, which is great. However I came across this article on Phoronix : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTA5NTM

Apparently ST3C is now supported by Nouveau. I would really like to get this running under gentoo. Does anybody know how?

Ok I got it working again, I think.
The problem is the sound output. What I did was go into vlc's options and change the selected sound card from default to my specific one (in this case Nvidia nforce2 ac97 iirc) That seems to have solved the problem. You need to refresh the list of sound cards ...
